Biography

John Stobart was born in 1859 in Warden OR Haydon Bridge, Northumberland, England to Matthew Stobart and Hannah (Gill) Stobart. His birth was registered in Hexham, Northumberland in the third quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Gill.^[1]

In 1861 John Stobart (age 1) lived at Light Birks in Haydon with his father Matthew (26, Road Maker), mother Hannah (29), and brother [William] L (3).^[2]

In 1871 John Stobart (age 11, Scholar) lived in Haydon with his father Matthew (35, Quarryman), mother Hannah (38), and three brothers: William Leonard (13, Agricultural Labourer), Matthew (7, Scholar), and Joseph (5).^[3]

In 1881 John Stobart (age 21, Platelayer) lived in Haydon with his father Matthew (45, Platelayer), mother Hannah (49), and three brothers: William (23, Stone Mason), Matthew (17, Reporter Printer), and Joseph (15, Labourer at Iron Works).^[4]

Research Note

The John Stobart who married Mary Ann Harrison in 1887 and was the father of Jane Isabella (Stobart) Metcalfe (1888-1957) does not seem to be the same man. Census records indicate that that John Stobart was born in Allendale, Northumberland. He is most likely the son of John Stobart and Jane (Robinson) Stobart who was born in Allendale in 1859.
