Biography

"Sandy River" John Stockton

John Stockton of Sandy River, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, was a son of Agnes (nee unknown) and Richard Stockton, Sr., and a grandson of Davis Stockton (c.1685-1761) of Albemarle County, Virginia. In about 1807, John Stockton died on his 936-acre property on the Sandy River in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

John's wife was Mary "Polly" probably nee Morton. Mary's maiden name is shown by many researchers as Morton, and she might be a daughter of John Morton of Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any proof her maiden name was Morton.

"Thomas Harget deeded 253 acres for 100 lbs to Joseph Morton [a son of John Morton] on both sides of Sandy Creek [River], conveyed to said Harget by John Chiswell, Gentleman. Witness: Jehue Morton [bro of Joseph, Jr.] and John Stockton." Mary "Polly" and John Stockton, who owned land on Sandy River, named a son Peter Harget Stockton.

It appears that there is some kind of connection between the Mary "Polly" and John Stockton family and William Devin, Sr., who also owned land on the Sandy River and died 1802, although his will appears to show that Mary "Polly" Stockton was probably not his daughter.

After John Stockton died in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, Mary and some of her children moved to near Burkesville in Cumberland County, Kentucky, where Mary died in 1826.

John and Mary "Polly" were the parents of:
Peter Harget Stockton, about 1765, married Rachel Stockton, a cousin
Ichabod Stockton, about 1767
Phoebe Stockton, about 1770
Agnes "Aggy" Stockton, about 1770
Edith Stockton, about 1772
John Peyton Stockton, about 1778
Elizabeth Stockton, about 1782
Mary Katherine Stockton, about 1784
Lemuel Stockton, about 1795
Martha "Patsy" Stockton, about 1799
Hiram Stockton, about 1800

The date of birth and place of birth shown for Mary "Polly" Stockton are questionable.
