Biography

Jemima or Jamima (nee Stockton) Sharp

Find a Grave:

Her headstone uses the spelling of Jamima, however, she is commonly shown by descendants as Jemima. The given name of Jemima is about 20 times more common than the given name of Jamima.

Jemima Stockton, a daughter of Agnes (nee unknown) and Richard Stockton, Sr., and a granddaughter of Davis Stockton (c.1685-1761) of Albemarle County, Virginia, married William Sharp. Jemima appears to have been born in Albemarle County in 1747, however, she might have been born as late as about 1754.

It is not known when or where William Sharp and Jemima Stockton married. Many of Jemima's siblings moved from Albemarle County, Virginia, to Augusta County, Virginia, where they lived for a few years. Some of Jemima's siblings then moved south to Henry County, Virginia. It is not known if Jemima also moved to Augusta County before moving to Henry County, but that appears very possible.

By 1778 Jemima (nee Stockton) and William Sharp were living in Henry County probably near the North Mayo River. This was very close to the Henry County border with Patrick County. Several of Jemima's siblings were also living in Henry County at that time. Jemima's brother, Thomas Stockton, Sr., who married Mary (nee unknown), also owned property on the North Mayo River.

By about 1812 Jemima and William Sharp had moved to near Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee. The 1830 census Franklin County, Tennessee, shows William Sharp, 70 to 80 years old, and one female, 70 to 80 years old.

Jemima (nee Stockton) Sharp is buried in Sharp Springs Cemetery in Franklin County, Tennessee. Her headstone indicates a 1747 year of birth, however, she might have been born as late as about 1754. Her husband was born in 1751, her first child was born in 1777, and her last child was born in 1800.

Richard Sharp
Sue Frances Sharp
Margaret Sharp
Mary "Polly" Sharp

Stockton-1582 and Stockton-428 appear to represent the same person because: These are duplicate children resulting from the merge of a duplicate mother. They share the same name and dates are reasonably close. Let's merge into Stockton-428, the lowest numbered profile. Thanks for all of your help keeping WikiTree tidy!

All the best, Janet
