Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Sylvanus Stokes III was a Virginia colonist.

Sylvanus Stokes was born in 1696, in Surry County, Virginia, a son of Sylvanus Stokes and Susannah Jones.

About 1736, Sylvanus married Cecelia Walker, named in his will as his wife as Cecelia Stokes, executor and heir, until her death, of his lands & plantation.

He is named, "my Second Son Silvanus Stokes", in his father Sylvanus Stokes' Will on 18 May 1742.[1]

Will & Death

Last Will and Testament of SIlvanus Stokes[2]
Sussex County, Virginia.
23 May 1758.
19 June 1766 (proved).

The entire Will of Sylvanus Stokes is transcribed here.

Will of Sylvanus Stokes dated 23 May 1758, proved 19 June 1766: makes wife, CILIA, the sole executor and bequeaths her "all my lands lying on the South side the Rachoon swamp in Sussex County with my Plantation I now live on with all other appurtenances thereunto or in any wise appertaining during her natural life. And after her Death to my son MICAJAH STOKES " Other bequeaths made to: Son, MARCUS STOKES; son, SILVANUS STOKES; son, DRURY STOKES; daughter, PHEBA FREEMAN; daughter, SUSANNAH GREEN; daughter, ELIZABETH KNIGHT; daughter, LUCY STOKES; daughter, AGNESS STOKES; daughter, LEDIA STOKES. Note: Cecelia died in 1788; sons, Marcus, Drury and grandson, Hamlin Freeman filed a Deed of Emancipation for her slaves as requested in her will; filed 18 October 1788 and notes that her will had not yet been proved. Considering the estimated year that Silvanus was born, it's possible that he had a wife prior to Cecilia and she may have been the mother of earlier born children (Mary & Young Stokes?). Note: Sylvanus made bequeaths to ten children and Mary is not named.[3]

  1. son Marcus

Honi, is it pronounced Honey?

Thanks for the photo of the birth/baptism record of my Lydia Stokes. I had this info for some time from the terrific record work by John Bennett Boddie nearly a century ago, but so reassuring to see copies of the actual records. Keep up the good work. Evedene Bennett
