Biography

Volga German
Katharina (Stoll) Rau was a Volga German.
Katharina (Stoll) Rau has German Roots.

Family #16 in the 1767 Dönhof census.
Family # 19 in the 1775 Dönhof census.
Family #35 in the 1798 Grimm census.

Anna Katharina Stoll was the daughter of Friedrich Stoll who immigrated to Denmark first, before making a final immigration to the Volga region of Russia. [1] His first wife, Maria Eva Schumacher, bore him two children, both who died in infancy, and she herself perished in Denmark in 1763. [2] His second marriage was to Anna Katharina's mother, Dorothea Elisabetha Rutz, in Denmark, and their first daughter, Eva Catharina, was born in 1766, [3] during the couple's journey to Russia or in Dönhof.

Anna Katharina's name is not specifically mentioned in the 1767 Dönhof census, and since the birth years for the two sisters match, there is a question of whether Anna Katharina Stoll and Eva Catharina Stoll are the same person.

1767 Dönhof Census [4]

Family # 16
Head of the Household Friedrich Stoll, age 33, Lutheran farmer from Kurpfalz
Wife Anna Catharina Stoll, age 23
Child #1 Eva Katharina Stoll, age 1

Eva Katharina is also named in the 1775 Grimm census and identified as being 8 years old. [5] The 1775 census mentions another daughter Maria Elisabeth, but no Anna Katharina. [6] Anna Katharina would have been only 8 years old in 1775, the same age as Eva Katharina, not old enough to be living with another family or married.

By the time of the 1798 census, Anna Katharina had six additional siblings listed in the Dönhof census: [7]

  • Johann Christopher, born 1775
  • Johann Wilhelm, born in 1778
  • Elisabeth Barbara, born in 1780
  • Johannes, born 1784
  • Johann Heinrich, born in 1786
  • Katharina Elisabeth, born in 1789

By 1798, both Anna Katharina and her possible sister Eva Catharina were old enough to be married and living with other families. The 1798 Grimm census claims Anna Katharina was from the Village of Dönhof, born in 1766. She and her husband Johann Philipp Rau had five children:.

1798 Grimm Census [8]

Family # 35
Head of the Household Balthasar Rau, age 67
Child #1 Philipp Rau, age 31
Wife of Child #1 Anna Katharina Stoll, age 32, from Dönhof
Grandchild #1 Johann Wilhelm Rau, age 7
Grandchild #1 Gottfried Rau, age 1
Grandchild #1 Anna Margaretha Rau, age 9
Grandchild #1 Juliana Rau, age 6
Grandchild #1 Margaretha Rau, age 3

Only daughter Stoll daughter Eva Catharina is listed in Einwanderung in das Wolgagebiet 1764-1767, and she is the same age as Anna Katharina. No other children are listed. There were no other Stolls living in Dönhof. [9] I double checked the Stoll family that settled immediately in Grimm, and they had no daughter named Anna Katharina who was born in 1766. [10]

By 1834, neither Anna Katharina nor her husband are listed in the census, but her son Wilhelm and his children are listed there. [11] She most likely died prior to the census being taken.
