She married William Arthur on 12 April 1821. [2] Together they had 9 children:
Almeda Arthur (1825–1899), the wife of James H. Masten, who served as postmaster of Cohoes and publisher of the Cohoes Cataract newspaper.
Ann Arthur(1828–1915), a career educator who taught school in New York, as well as working in South Carolina in the years immediately before and after the Civil War.
Regina Arthur (1822–1910), the wife of William G. Caw, a grocer, banker, and community leader of Cohoes, New York who served as town supervisor and village trustee
Malvina Arthur (1832–1920), the wife of Henry J. Haynesworth, who was an official of the Confederate government and a merchant in Albany, New York before being appointed as a captain and assistant quartermaster in the U.S. Army during Arthur's presidency[
Mary Arthur (1841–1917), the wife of John E. McElroy, an Albany businessman and insurance executive, and Arthur's official White House hostess during his presidency.
William Arthur (1834–1915), a medical school graduate who became a career Army officer and paymaster, he was wounded during his Civil War service. William Arthur retired in 1898 with the brevet rank of lieutenant colonel, and permanent rank of major.
Malvina’s father was Welsh and her grandfather, Uriah Stone served with the Continental Army and fought in the American Revolution. [3]
Malvina Stone met William Arthur when Arthur was teaching school in Dunham, Quebec, near the Vermont border. [4] They married in Dunham on April 12, 1821, soon after meeting. [5]
In the 1850 United States Federal Census the family was living in Hoosick, Rensselaer, New York. Along with her husband, William, four of their children were still living with them; Chester Arthur 20; Ann E Arthur 22; Williamm Arthur 16; and Mary Arthur 8. [6]
At the age of 58, Malvina and William now 62 they were living in Watervliet, Albany, New York for the 1860 United Stats Federal Census. Two of their daughters were still living with them; Ann E Arthur age 30 and Mary Arthur age 19. Two other young women are living in the household with them; Nancy Wilson age 29 and Marion Fidel age 17. [7]
