Sterling was born in 1866. He was the son of George Stoner and Elizabeth Wilson. He is list on the 1880 US Census for Louisiana at age 13.

A double wedding took place at the home of Mr. McJimsey, near "Sunny Point, " Texas, Sterling Stoner marrying Miss Emma McJimsey, and John McJimsey being joined in wedlock with Miss Beulah Jackson. Mr. Stoner was the son of Judge G. W. Stoner, of Jewella.
