Biography

James was born in 1821 in Beaufort District, South Carolina. His parents were George Mosse Stoney and Catherine Adams Jenkins. His father was a physician and a planter with a plantation on Hilton Head Island and a home in Beaufort, South Carolina. He had a brother and he had half brothers and sisters from his father's second marriage.

His great grandfather was John Stoney also known as Cpt Jack. a soldier of the Revolutionary War, privateer during that war and the War of 1812. and a land owner of plantations on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Another great grandfather was George Mosse a physician from Savannah.

His grandfather was James Stoney of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and his grandmother was Elizabeth Mosse daughter of George Mosse of Savannah.

James was married to Mary Catherine Reed in about 1842.
