Biography

John Stover was born on August 04, 1709 in York, York, Massachusetts Bay. His parents were John Stover and Abigail Alcott. He married Miriam Harmon on December 28, 1728 at York, York, Maine by Rev Mr Samuel Moody. [1]. Together they had 8 children:

  1. Mary Stover
  2. Alcot Stover
  3. John Stover
  4. Joseph Stover
  5. Willis Stover
  6. Mary Stover
  7. Wanton Stover
  8. Johnson Stover

He died in 1786 in Harpswell, Cumberland, Maine, United States.

He moved from York to Harpswell in 1727, being one of the first permanent settlers in Harpswell. In 1736 his father-in-law Johnson Harmon deeded him 100 acres on Merriconeag Neck. He was in York 1734, and in North Yarmouth 1736 and 1740. He signed a petition at Merriconeag (Harpswell-Brunswick) in 1740.

He and his wife lived in a log cabin on a hill facing Stover's Cove. They are buried near the site where the cabin stood. In 1939 a direct descendant of John took down the names of the stones still standing in this cemetery on private land. Many stones were buried beneath the ground including those of John and Miriam.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Hey Justin,

I am doing some work in the Stover lines and hopefully will be adding information and sources to these profiles.
