Biography

Jacob Stover, Jr., was born in the 1790s in Franklin County, Virginia according to a contemporary, William Turner, in his remembrances during the 1920s.[1]. Different sources give differing evidence of the exact year.

Jacob and his family moved quite a bit during his lifetime. An 1830 Census record puts him in Logan County, Virginia which at that time included the area that later became Raleigh and Fayette Counties.[2]

The 1850 Census finds his family in Van Buren, Madison County, Indiana [3]

The Census lists Jacob, his wife, and 6 children still living with them.

  • Jacob Stover, M, 60, Virginia
  • Olive Stover, F, 50, Virginia
  • Elijah Stover, M, 27, Virginia
  • Jerisey Stover, F, 16, Virginia
  • Henry Stover, M, 12, Virginia
  • Olive Stover, F, 9, Virginia
  • Mary Stover, F, 6, Virginia
  • Eunice Stover, F, 3, Virginia

At some point the family--or perhaps only some of the family--must have returned to West Virginia because the daughter, Olive, married Wilson Williams in Raleigh County in 1859.[4] It is possible that Jacob was already deceased at that time.

Research Notes

Doubtful this Jacob Stover is the same as the one who died in Page County, Virginia in March 1850. This Jacob was alive and living in Indiana in July 1850, per the 1850 census record shown above. So, I removed the source for the Page County, Virginia Mortality Schedule, and adjusted the death details.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jacob by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jacob:

I agree with the merger of these two profiles. However, the "433" profile contains a source and data that indicate that Jacob died in Page County VA. I believe this is in error since he was also in Indiana in 1850 Census and to my knowledge never travelled to northern Virginia. I also know that his daughter Olive married Wilson Williams in late 1850s in Raleigh County WV. This seems to indicate that perhaps he returned to WV from Indiana after 1850.

I recommend that you remove the source for a death in Page County, VA, and adjust the death date and place to be uncertain.

Stover-433 and Stover-2782 appear to represent the same person because: clear duplicate. Profile did not pop up when I created John because I have his birth year at 1790, based on 1850 Indiana census record.

Stover-433 and Stover-1820 appear to represent the same person because: I created the Stover-1820 profile since I was unaware of the existing Stover-433 profile. The two profiles share the same name, birth place, approximate birth date, spouse, and history.
