Ancestry indexed all of Sussex parish registers (with digital images) somewhat recently (last few years) - but not soon enough for my own Sussex ancestors who had to be found on the actual films about 20 years ago now. I had to order in one film twice back then because I didn't know who I was looking for and missed my persons on first viewing!
They did this like then have done most of London, Warwickshire, Somerset and a few others done really well with matching digital images. Some other counties are indexed but missing the digital images so not so useful at all.
While I certainly appreciate online access to images of original records, I am also glad that the lack thereof prompted to visit East Grinstead and related record repositories in 1996 and 2001. I found priceless genealogical gems then that may never be online.
Some years ago there was a man named Barrie who had indexed Sussex church records and the Census 1821, the Rate Book 1821 and the Poor Relief 1821 BUT his data seems to have disappeared from the webpages I had saved.
Did you know some of the 1821 census has survived - amazingly some of it for Sussex. I was able to get a copy for my ancestor in Broadwater, Sussex.
