DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Ansel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Ansel:

I cannot find any supporting documentation that Ansel Stroud's first name was James. I have a 1810 census, 1821 land grant, and his son's death certificate, and his will, which all list him simply as Ansel. The biography of the Stroud Family by Leatha Betts also lists him as Ancil (Anzel).

Sylvia, Thank you! And to add to your findings, or lack thereof, I research Mark Stroud b. 1775 VA, and several person's on other research sites have labeled Ansel Stroud and Mark Stroud as the same person, even though both can be found in two separate counties at the exact same time on census years. My Mark Stroud has been attached to your Ansel Stroud's wife Sarah Adams, as Mark's first wife, but there has been no supporting documentation for whom Mark's wife's name ever was and where they may have married. I do know that he married in 1826 in Cabell County, VA(West Virginia) to a Sarah Miller. They show up in the Lawrence Co., KY census years from 1830, 1840, and in 1850 they are listed as ages 75, and 70 respectively. So, this Sarah Miller Stroud was most likely near 46 years of age when she married Mark Stroud when he was about age 51 in 1826. She was most likely a widow, as I find a William Miller and his family living in close proximity to Mark and Sarah, young enough to be her son. My Mark Stroud gave written consent in Floyd Co., KY in Mar 1822 for his daughter Sally Stroud to marry William Nelson b. 1801, (s/o Emanuel Nelson/Frances Smith) to marry and this couple moved into Cabell Co., VA in the 1830's, which later that section of Cabell County, became Wayne Co., WV and some Stroud family members are living in close proximity to the Nelson's, one being my ancestors Farmer Nelson (b. 1825 KY, s/o Wm Nelson & Sally Stroud) and wife Matilda Maynard Nelson in 1850 Wayne Co., WV with their son Allen Nelson age 01, b. KY, and Fanny Stroud age 24, now determined to be Frances Fanny Wiley Stroud, sister to Thomas Wiley, husband to Eveline Nelson Wiley (b. 1823, d/o Wm Nelson & Sally Stroud) who Fanny Wiley Stroud age 24 was a divorced wife of John W. Stroud b. abt. 1816, suspected son of Mark Stroud and Unknown first wife, who left his wife Fanny, and married Matilda Marcum and lived in Logan and Lincoln Counties., WV. A John Wesley Stroud b. 1833, b. Wayne Co., WV listed in his Civil War Military Pension Application in the 1890's in Fayette Co., WV, and on his death record in Fayette Co., WV 1922, that his parent's were William Stroud and Rachel Nelson, and that he was born in Wayne Co., WV and that he still had a brother and cousins residing in Wayne Co., WV. It was not stated what became of his parents, but a Wesley Stroud is found in the 1850 Wayne Co., VA(WV) census living in the Family home of Henry Mainard (Maynard) and wife Nancy Mainard, Harmon Stroud age 21 son in law, Sarah (Mainard/Maynard) Stroud age 21, daughter, next page, *Wesley Stroud age 15, and Martha Stroud age 07. Later, in 1860 Wayne Co., WV, Martha Stroud married James Baber of Ohio, and she listed her parents as "M. Stroud." Only adding to more confusion. Harmon Stroud's parents have not been fully established. A William D. Stroud, physician, of Fayette Co., b. abt. 1818, married several times, listed his parent's names as Thomas Stroud and Nancy. I do not know if John Wesley Stroud b. 1833, Wayne Co., WV knew the William D. Stroud, while residing in Fayette Co., WV, but it is possible that THOMAS STROUD and MARK STROUD were related, but no supporting documentation has been found, yet. But, I do know that the SARAH ADAMS STROUD attached to Mark Stroud IS NOT Mark's first wife. A marriage record for Ansel Stroud to Sarah Adams is found in 1803 and it does not seem likely that SARAH ADAMS STROUD would have abandoned her newborn/infant daughter Sally Stroud Nelson b. 1802, to Sally's father MARK STROUD. There were some Stroud families that were attacked and murdered in Greenbrier County, VA (WV) in the 1770/80's and is documented in early histories of West Virginia. So, I agree with you!
