Biography

This profile is part of the Stewart Name Study.

Annie Victoria Stuart was born 7 July 1850 in Berks County, Pennsylvania.[1] Her death certificate names her parents as Sam B. Stewart and Cath Himmelberger, both born in Pennsylvania.[2]

She is presumed to be the child who was recorded in the 1850 U.S. Census as Nancy Stewart, age 1, in the household of James and Catherine Stewart in Caernarvon Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.[3]

As of the 1860 census, she was a young child living in Caernarvon Township of Berks County in the household of her widowed mother Catharine Stuart (spelled Stewart in the census record), with older sisters Amelia and Elmira Stuart.[4]

She married William M. Stubblebine, who worked as a gardener and caretaker at Joanna Furnace in Robeson Township in Berks County.[5] They were the parents of five children.

The 1900 U.S. Census recorded farm laborer William Stubblebine, 47, and Anna A. Stubblebine, 49, born in June 1850, in Robeseon Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, with Sarah Stubblebine, 18. All were born in Pennsylvania. William and Anna had been married 26 years; Anna had had five children, all of whom were living.[6]

The 1910 U.S. Census listed William M. Stubblebine, 57, and Anna V. Stubblebine, 59, in Robeson Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. They had been married 37 years; it was the first marriage for both. She was the mother of five children, of whom four were living.[7]

Annie Victoria Stubblebine died in Reading, Pennsylvania, on 2 March 1926.[2] Before her death, she had suffered from a tumor in her brain.[8] The death certificate listed "general sarcomatosis [and] epithelioma of left eye" as the cause of death.[2]

Note: The 1850 census entry for this family contains several errors that, taken together, suggest that the information was not provided by the family, but someone else in the community who was acquainted with the family, but wasn't very closely acquainted with them. Father Samuel is misidentified as James (the name of his father and his brother) and is said to be 44 years old, when his gravestone indicates he was 48; his 45-year-old wife Catharine is said to be 35 years old; 18-year-old daughter Sarah is said to be 15 years old; 10-year-old daughter Amelia is said to be 11 years old; daughter Elmira, who was just shy of her 8th birthday, is said to be 10 years old; and one-month-old daughter Annie Victoria is listed as one-year-old Nancy.
