Biography

Birth and parents : Margaret's birth date is estimated at 1735 (assuming that her children were born between 1753 and 1783 as currently listed). No evidence has been located to confirm her last name at birth, although a family tradition arising in the 1920's records that it was Studebaker (or possibly Becker).[1] An unsourced Findagrave entry records that she was born c.1734 in Germany, daughter of Peter Studebaker and Anna Margaretha Aschauer.[2] Further research is required to confirm / disprove / clarify.

Marriage and children : Margaret was the wife of Jacob Snider.[1] They are reported to have married in 1752 at Quakers Church, Columbia, Pennsylvania, although no record has been located.

Margaret and Jacob were the parents of :

  1. Jacob Jr [2]
  2. John [2]
  3. Mary [2]
  4. Abraham [2]
  5. David [2]
  6. Joseph [2]
  7. Susanna [2]
  8. Hannah [2]
  9. Elizabeth [2]
  10. Daniel [2]
  11. M. Rosanna [2]
  12. George [2]
  13. William [2]

In 1795, some 5 years after Jacob's death, Margaret settled in Providence Twp, Bedford, PA, where she purchased land and is recorded paying taxes from 1796 to 1811. Deeds record the sale of some portions of the land in 1796 and another portion in 1812.[1]

Death and burial : Margaret died after Dec 1812.[1] An unsourced Findagrave entry gives that she is buried in the Snitcher-Ritchey Cemetery in Snakespring Valley, Bedford, PA.[2]

Research Notes

An earlier unsourced version of the profile recorded that Margaret was born c.1740 in Berkeley, WV and died and was buried there in 1799. It is not clear whether these details were provided speculatively for the wife of Jacob Snider, or whether they belong in fact to a different woman named Margaret Studebaker.

What are the primary sources that the parents of Margaret Mary Snider are Peter Studebaker and Anna Aschauer?
posted by Craig Hammerberg
About a month ago, I posted the above question concerning the parents of Margaret Mary Snider (Studebaker-49). So far, nobody has responded, maybe because there are no primary sources.

If one looks at the book ¨The Studebaker family in America¨ by Walter Carlock et al., a definite work on the genealogy of the Studebakers, there is no mention that the parents of Margaret Mary Snider are Peter Studebaker and Anna Aschauer. On page 707 of that book, ¨Margaret Studebaker b c1714 (Snider family tradition this Margaret) m JACOB SNIDER SR b 1711. Srvd Revolutionary War.¨ A family tradition said that a Margaret Stufebaker married Jacob Snider. However, no parents are given for this Margaret Studebaker in the family tradition. I would suggest that Peter Studebaker and Anna Aschauer be removed as parents of Margaret Mary Snider.
