Daughter Remembers

Deborah Sullivan Murphree in Sullivan’s Hollow Mississippi Facebook group posted on Nov. 10, 2018 her thoughts of her father. Permission was given by her to share her post. Bishop-4082 13:58, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

Today would be my Dad's 100th birthday. He is Orson Pratt Sullivan. Born November 10, 1918 and died October 3, 1989. He rests in the Sullivan portion of the Peacock cemetery in Shivers, MS. He was the youngest son of Frank (known as Walking Frank) and Polly (Grace) Sullivan. They rest in the Alex Sullivan cemetery. Dad also served as a Marine during WWII. He was a sharp shooter stationed in the Pacific assigned to the USS Nevada. He was at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. He received a purple heart medal for his injury. He met Margie Alene Sullivan shortly after his discharge. He was visiting his older sister Clara in Shivers. Clara and her family were neighbors to my mother's parents, Vardamon and Gladys Sullivan. Dad and mother married February 17, 1947. My sister, Muriel (Sills) was born December 1948, she died in 2012 at home in SLC, Utah. I was born in January 1958. Dad was proud of his military background, proud to have served his country. He loved his family heritage. He was a very quiet man, very private and in later years was suspicious of strangers. He would sit in the front yard, facing the road, with his shotgun across his lap "just in case". I thank God we lived in the country on our road. He was given the name of Orson Pratt by his father, who named him after the Mormon dignitary who founded Salt Lake City. He was Brigham Young and the first pioneers. Dad never was a member of the Church, but it is rather ironic that my sister and I both became members, and so are our families. We never knew about his namesake until we joined the Church and members recognized my dads name. I love doing our genealogy, I am the family historian and love the research involved...
