Biography

Francis Sullivan was born in March of 1835[1] to Cornelius Sullivan and Rachel Dannelly. He was married to Mary Tedder on 13 Mar 1855 in Washington County, Alabama.[2][3]

Francis and Mary had the following known children:

  1. Cornelius P. Sullivan was born in Alabama[4][3] 17 Oct 1856. He died 10 Oct 1886 and is buried in Clearwater Cemetery, Washington County, Alabama.[5] He married 13 May 1883, Sarah J. Middleton[6]
  2. William F. Sullivan was born in Alabama[3] in March[1] of 1858,[4] and died after 1910.[7]
  3. Isabella Sullivan was born in Alabama[4][3] 06 Jan 1860; died 19 Sep 1886 and is buried in Clearwater Cemetery, Washington County, Alabama.[8]
  4. Jefferson Davis Sullivan was born in Alabama about 1862;[3] and he died in Wager, Washington County, Alabama on 29 Jan 1938.[9] He married Clara Lane on 23 Feb 1887 in Washington County, Alabama.[10]
  5. Rachael 'Housey' Sullivan[7] was born in Alabama in May[1] of 1864,[3] and died 21 Nov 1936 at Carson, Washington County, Alabama.[11] She was a deaf/mute and never married.
  6. Leroy Sullivan was born in Alabama about 1868,[3] and died after 1910.[7] He was deaf/mute and never married.
  7. Susan[3] 'Amanda' Sullivan was born about 1870 and died 01 Apr 1938 in Carson, Washington County, Alabama.[12] She married George Robert Woodyard on 25 Mar 1896 in Washington County, Alabama.[13]
  8. Hunter Sullivan was born in Washington, Alamaba between 1867-1885 [see notes below]. He was a deaf/mute and never married.
  9. George Washington Sullivan[14] was born in Alabama[3] c1873 [see notes below] and died 27 Feb 1960 at Carbon, Washington County, Alabama.[14] He married Mary E. Bailey on 4 Apr 1895 in Washington County, Alabama.[13]

Frank recorded his brand and mark as "a split in the right and under square in the left ear, Brand FB" at Washington County, Alabama on 25 Jul 1863.[15]

After the death of his son Cornelius in 1886, his daughter-in-law, Sarah (Middleton) and her children lived with or next door to Francis and Mary. Sarah continued to have children, giving birth to the following:

  1. Henderson Sullivan was born in Washington County on 30 Jul 1891,[16] and died in Chatom, Alabama in October 1976.[17] About 1914 he married Mamie Sullivan.
  2. Ada "Mollie" Sullivan was born in Washington County on 8 Sep 1895, and died on 14 Mar 1983 in Wagarville.[17] She married Levi Franklin Sullivan about 1915. Levi was the son of her ½ first cousin Frank B. Sullivan.
  3. David R. Sullivan was born in Washington County on 14 Feb 1899,[18] and died on 13 Nov 1972 in Wagarville.[19][17] About 1927 he married Martha Sullivan, daughter of his ½ first cousin, Frank B. Sullivan.
  4. Bessie Louella Sullivan was born in Wagar on 10 Feb 1901, and died in Wagarville on 15 Sep 1987.[20][17] She married Alexander Stephen Sullivan in 1917.[21] Alex was the son of her ½ first cousin, William H. Sullivan.
  5. Lewis Eugene Sullivan was born in Wagar on 8 Jun 1903, and died in Wagarville on 24 Jun 2001.[20][17][18] About 1923 Lewis married Margaret Sullivan, daughter of his ½ first cousin, Frank B. Sullivan.

It is believed these are the children of her father-in-law, Francis Marion Sullivan.[22]

Frank was captured in the 1900 Census twice:

  • 15 Jun 1900, sunflower, Washington, AL, with wife, Mary; son, Leroy; daughter, Rachael; his widowed daughter-in-law, Sarah; his grandchildren by Sarah and Cornelius, Lawrence and Isabel; and his illegitimate children by Sarah (listed as his grandchildren), Henderson, Mollie, and D. R.[23]
  • 18 Jun 1900, St. Stephens, Washington, AL, with wife, Mary and son, William F. Next door are Sarah J. (Middleton) Sullivan and her children, Lawrence, Annie B., Henderson, Mollie and David R.[24]

In 1910, Sarah and her children continued to live next door to Frank, who was also widowed by this time.[25]

Frank died 24 Nov 1914 in Washington County, Alabama.[26] [27]

Probate Court[28]
December 15, 1914
J. D. Sullivan, son of Frank M. Sullivan, petitioned the court to be administrator of his father's estate, stating he left no will or testament. Gives date of death as 20 Nov 1914 and lists the real and personal property Frank died seized of as "about 25 head of cattle; about one Hundred sheep; Two Horses; Forty Hogs and 80 acres of land", estimated to be worth about Eight Hundred Dollars. He lists the following heirs/distributees:

E. Sullivan, son, over 21 years old, near Wagar, Alabama, mute
Hunter Sullivan, Do, Do, mute
Rachael Sullivan, daughter, Do, Do, mute
George Sullivan, Jr., son, Do, Do [I am assuming that Jr. was used in this document to differentiate between Francis's brother George Washington Sullivan and his son of the same name]
Amanda Woodyard, daughter, wife of G.R. Woodyard, over 21 years old, near Wagon, Ala.
J. D. Sullivan, son, over 21 years old, near Wagar, Ala.
Anna B. Thompson, wife of Jim Thompson, only daughter of C. P. [Cornelius] Sullivan, deceased son of Frank M. Sullivan.

Research Notes

I knew that Leroy and Rachael were deaf (I assume E. Sullivan listed above is Leroy, but have nothing to vertify this). How odd that Frank and Mary had three deaf/mute children. Hunter Sullivan does not appear in the early census records with the family. In 1880, he would have been 8 years old; perhaps he was away at a school for the deaf. In 1900[29] and 1930, he was living with his brother Davis Sullivan in Sunflower, Washington, AL.[30]

The FAG profile for Hunter reads:
Hunter W. Sullivan (no records have been found that record Francis's son Hunter with the middle initial of "W"); born 3 oct 1872; died 26 Dec 1944, Jackson, Clarke, AL.[36] This profile also states that Hunter was married to Emma Mae Ingraham, but Hunter was never married, as shown in every census record he was recorded in. Other notes on this profile claim he was the son of Frank Sullivan and Polly Keith, and that he was married to Mary Bailey. Mary Bailey was married to Hunter's brother George Washington Sullivan.

George does not have a FAG profile but the Alabama Death and Burials Index shows:
George Washington Sullivan; born abt 1873; died 27 Feb 1960, Carbon [Carson], Washington, AL.[37]

Both David R., [38] and Bessie L. Sullivan's[20] death records list their father as Frank Sullivan. This has led some researches to assume this meant that Cornelius's middle name was Frank, but his middle initial was P.

Henderson Sullivan's wife, Mamie is listed on her son, Chester Leon Sullivan's birth certificate as Mamie "Sullivan". [39]
