Joley was born about 1755. Joley Summerfield is likely the daughter of William Summerfield and Mary Bonham. The Roy family she was Cherokee, the daughter of Chief Summerfield (there was no Chief Summerfield) but the daughter her likely brother Joseph, Sarah Summerfield married Joseph Roy Jr. and several descendants of the Carr's married his descendants.

According to Find a Grave, her name is Ann Joley and she was born in 1743 in West Virginia. She died in Pendleton County, WV. She is buried in Roy's Gap Cemetery in Seneca Rocks, Pendleton County, West Virginia, USA.

- From Beth Leasure-Hudson's research: To date, nothing links William and Mary Bonham Summerfield of England to any of the West Virginia Summerfields, except speculative family trees on the internet (my own tree included.) Further, only Joseph and Thomas Summerfield are mentioned as bonded emigrants to America; it is highly unlikely a sister would have accompanied them, and more unlikely that she would have been left out of the ship's lists.

Joley's surname is speculative; but even if it is Summerfield, it is misnamed. A Phebe Sommer Fields is listed as a sister of Joley; Phebe is purported to be a daughter of Anna Eldridge and a Penobscot possibly named Sommer Fields or Fields. To date there is no evidence for any of these connections to a Penobscot father or man named Sommer Fields or Fields. Some trees claim this connection with the Penobscot but there is no evidence to date; just speculation within internet-built trees.

Joley was likely the name adapted meaning beautiful in French because her husband, Joseph Roy Sr. is thought to be descended from French who came south from Canada. Her surname is not substantiated. Very little is known about this woman except her husband and her children. Further, her children married Summerfields. While marrying a first cousin was more prevalent during this time period; I have never seen a Summerfield marrying an aunt/uncle or nephew/niece. Joley and Joseph's son, Joseph Jr. married Sarah Summerfield (meaning in your configuration, Joseph would have been marrying his aunt- extremely unlikely.) To date, no DNA evidence corroborates Native American ethnicity.

Would be happy to review any well-sourced evidence refuting what I've written above. Just because it is listed on a tree on the internet, does not make it so.

I am descended both from the union of Joseph Roy with Joley; as well as through Joseph Summerfield. Generations later, distant cousins married. Beth Leasure-Hudson
