Henry Sump was born in Brunswick, Germany. He lived on his father's farm until age 17 when he worked on a dairy farm and then as an office boy in Bremen, Germany.
In October 1864 he sailed for America on the "Bremen" and landed in New York 18 days later. He made his way to St. Louis, Missouri where he was variously employed, but mainly in a brickyard and sugar refinery until the fall of 1868 when he went up the river by steamer to Kansas City, Missouri and then on to Riley County, Kansas.
On January 7, 1869, Henry married Matilda Teske. Their first dwelling was a log house. The next years were devoted to development and improvement of the land land located in the Peach Grove Community, north of Randolph, Kansas. There was a new building in 1884, with the exception of the North and south wing.
Henry used the most improved machinery available. His operations included a windmill and water tanks. He raised livestock and kept a goodly number of draft horses using three to four teams in his farming operations.
The farm was still with his family as of 1973 when his Grandson, Tony took it over from his father, Anthony.[1]
