Battle of Hunt's Bluff marker: Media; William Sweat fought in this battle; they hoodwinked the British into believing they had several cannons aimed in their direction. The 'cannons' were made of logs. It worked and the British were captured. This tactic stopped a British invasion. photos by By Paul Crumlish, May 7, 2010

Research Notes

This pertains to William and his son William of St Peters;
Will:
"John Turbevil, his mark, Craven Co, planter. Wife: Elizabeth. Son: Charles. Daughters: Judith and Jemima. Lucy SWEAT. Grandsons: Morris and Matthew Murphy, George, under 21 years, and Solomon Turbivil; NATHAN SWEAT. Mentions: executors to sell estate as they see fit. Executors: Son-in-law, WILLIAM SWEAT; Thomas Burton. Wit: George Paul, Richard Herby. Written, 23 Jul 1763; Proven, 3 Aug 1763; Recorded (no date given), page 55."

From this will, we can surmise:

1. William Sweat was stated as the son-in-law of John Turbevil, apparently married to John's daughter, Lucy. Therefore William was a married adult in 1763. Assuming he was at least 20 years old when he married, he would have been born in the mid-1740's.

2. William Sweat and the former Lucy Turbeville had a son named NATHAN SWEAT, born before the will was written in 1763.

3. More than likely, William Sweat and Lucy Turbevil had other children. Several genealogies have been submitted and posted on the Internet suggesting that there were at least three other children: William, John, and James. The submitters suggest furthermore that these Sweat males in particular are related to the Turbeville family as children of William Sweat and Lucy. These Sweat males show up as family heads in the Beaufort District of SC in the 1790 census. However, there were others.

In the 1790 census, in the state of South Carolina, there were a total of 10 heads of household named Sweat or a spelling variation thereof. In addition to William SWEATT, there were: Benjamen SWEAT and Thomas SWEET in Orangeburg District, north part; James, John, Nathan, and William SWEAT, in Beauford District; Anthony SWEET, Orangeburg District, Prince Georges Parish; Bernard SWEATT in Camden District, Richland Co.; John SWEATT in Camden District, Fairfield County.

From "Free African Americans of NC" (June, 1992) by Paul Heinegg [available at McClung Library, Knoxville; also for sale at National Archives (NARA), in Washington, DC]:
There are more than a dozen Public Trees at Ancestry.com that mention a William Sweat from the Cheraw District of South Carolina. The consensus of opinion (there were no genealogical SOURCES or citations) is that this particular William Sweat was born in 1757 in Chesterfield, Cheraw District, South Carolina. One Tree indicated he was born at Hunt's Bluff, Cheraw District, SC. The Public Trees also agree that William died in 1790 at St. Peters, Beafort, South Carolina.
William was the son of a William Sweat (1732-1763) and Lucy Turbevil or Turbevillle (1738-1763). No wife has been indicated for the William Sweat, born in 1757.

Sweat-1105 and Sweat-398 appear to represent the same person because: Data Doctor - same wife (attached to one profile and described in the other.) Same sons. Very similar vitals.
Let's merge the parents William Sweat and Martha Causey first so they don't end up disconnected from the One Shared Tree.
