Biography

Thomas Tate about 1826. He passed away in 1893.

He is listed as Indian, and was probably a member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians (pronounced "Soo Saint"). Sault (Soo) Band ancestors were part of the large Lake Superior Band of Chippewa Indians. The Ojibwe (Chippewa in the United States) were known to have migrated over centuries from the Atlantic Coast. They historically spoke the Ojibwe language, one of numerous Algonquian languages.

He is likely the son of a Scotish immigrant who married an native woman from the Chippewa Indians.
