Biography

Thomas TAYLOR may have been born on 15 Mar 1573/1574 in Hadley, Shropshire, England. [1]

There are other birth references made to Pennington Castle, Cumberland, England. These have the county incorrect: it was in the historic county of Lancashire and since 1974 has been in Cumbria.[2][3]

He is often given the title of Captain.

He married 09 Oct 1599 to Margaret SWINDERBY (daughter of Andrew SWINDERBY) in Middlesex, London, England. She was born about 1578 in Kobenhavn (Copenhagen), Denmark and died in 1672 in Hadleigh, Suffolk, England.

Thomas died, possibly about 1618 in Hadleigh, Suffolk, England.[4]

In 1635, three of their children immigrated to America on the ship Truelove. [5]

Research Notes

Father

Thomas is shown as son of Thomas Taylor (son of Rowland Taylor the martyr) and Elizabeth Burwell. These relationships are found in unsourced trees on the web, and (without good sourcing) in two privately produced family histories available on the web: one by William Taylor Wittel (dated 2000)[7] and the other by E Stuart Gregg (dated 1975)[8] Both of those works have substantial errors for martyr Rowland Taylor and his family. There appears at present to be no reliable evidence for Thomas Taylor the martyr's son being husband of Elizabeth Burwell and father of the Thomas of this profile. - Cayley-55 13:57, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

Birthplace

Note by Michael Cayley, 5-6 December 2019

Three suggested possible birthplaces are named in this profile: Hadley in Shropshire; Hadleigh in Suffolk; and Pennington Castle, historically in Lancashire. They are a long way apart from each other. As the main section of the biography makes clear, there appears to be no firm birthplace for Thomas.

The uncertain Shropshire birthplace - which comes from an unsourced statement placed by a contributor on FindAGrave - almost certainly reflects a confusion between Hadley in Shropshire and Hadleigh in Suffolk, where Rowland Taylor the martyr, currently shown on WikiTree as grandfather of Thomas, was rector.

William Taylor Wittel's family history work gives Thomas’s birthplace as ”Hadley, Middlesex, London", with no source. The place does not exist, and presumably this is a mistake for Hadleigh, Suffolk.[7]

Pennington Castle

Pennington Castle, near Ulverston in the Furness district of the historic county of Lancashire, is given not only as one of the suggested possible birthplaces of Thomas, but also as birthplace of two of his children. This is unlikely. The Castle was held by a Pennington family but they moved to nearby Muncaster Castle by the middle of the 13th century.[2] There is a 1318 mention of the Castle but by then it may already have started to fall into dilapidation or been largely destroyed (very little now remains). It may have been destroyed when Robert the Bruce raided Furness in 1316 and 1322.[9] There appears to be no record of any subsequent occupation of the Castle, which has only the most cursory of mentions in a footnote in the Victoria County History of Lancashire.[10] - Michael Cayley, 6 December 2019

Children’s Emigration on the Truelove

It is said, citing an Ancestry tree as source, that three of Thomas’s children emigrated to America on the Truelove in 1635. The ship made two known voyages that year. One was to Bermuda, with a passenger list dated 10 June 1635 and including Anne (24), James (28), Richard (16) and William (17) Tayler, with no indication of their parentage or precise relationship to each other.[11] They were almost certainly members of the same family, but there must be uncertainty about whether they were children of Thomas. The other voyage was to Massachusetts, leaving September 1635, with a George Tayler/Tyler age 31 on board.[12]

Grandson of Dr. Rowland Taylor and Margaret Tyndale. Son of Thomas Taylor I and Elizabeth Burwell Taylor. Husband of Margaret Swinderby Taylor.

The first of the name of Pendleton who came to the Colony of Virginia to make their home (in 1674 ) were two young men, Philip Pendleton , a teacher, and Nathaniel , his brother, a clergyman. The latter died very soon, unmarried; he evidently held no clerical charge in the Colony, as his name has never been given among the lists of the clergy of that time. Philip returned to England about 1680 ; tradition says he married a lady of high social position, but she died, and he returned to the Colony, and in 1682 married Isabella Hurt (or Hert or Hart,) and from this marriage are descended all the Pendletons of Virginia . Philip was born in Norwich, England , in 1650 , son of Henry Pendleton , 3rd son of Henry Pendleton , son and heir of George Pendleton , Gentleman, who married Elizabeth Pettingall dau. of John Pettingall , Gentleman of Norwich, Eng. George Pendleton moved from Manchester to Norwich in 1613 . His son and heir, Henry , probably married Susan- because in Vol. 48 of the New England Hist. and Gen. Register, is found a copy of the will of Sir John Pettus , Knight, of Norwich , Jan. 1613 , which says: "Appoint my cousin, Henry Pendleton , Supravisor of my estate." Also Thomas Pettus , of Caistree, St. Edmond's Norfolk , Oct. 1618 . "To my Cousins, Henry Pendleton and Susan , his wife, annuity out of my houses &c. in Norwich ." This family of Pettus is the same as the one in Va. The Pendletons were originally from Manchester , where the name was well known, some of them being in public life as early as the reign of Henry VIII. The Coat of Arms used by the Pendletons of Norwich and by the emigrant, Philip , indicate by the presence of Escallop shells and by the Cardinal's chapeau, in the Crest, a connection with Crusader traditions. The New England Pendletons , descendants of Brian Pendleton , came from Lancaster , and show a different Coat of Arms. Philip Pendleton is said to have settled in New Kent Co. , but there is no record of the family on the Register of St. Peter's Parish ; he probably lived always in the portion called afterwards Caroline county , the records of which were burnt during the war of '61-65 . Most of his descendants settled in counties New Kent . He died in 1721 , the same year his oldest son Henry died, and the same year his grandson, the eminent Judge Edmund Pendleton , was born. He had three sons and four daughters, two of his family married into the family of James Taylor , of Carlisle, Eng. , and by other intermarriages, a close connection with the Taylor family has been preserved. Some of his descendants were among the founders of St. Mark's Parish .

Thomas was born about 1574. He passed away about 1618.

Based on notes and sources on her profile, Anne (Taylor) Eastham Cary is being removed as daughter of this Capt. Thomas Taylor and added as daughter of Thomas Taylor.
Taylor-79095 and Taylor-1062 appear to represent the same person because: same wife and child, dates on -79095 are off due to lack of primary sources

Yes but the Margaret Tyndale married to Rowland taylor was NOT the daughter of John TYndale/Amphelice, she was from anotherTYndale line probably from theSW of Englad - Gloucestershire

All the sources are questionable if extracted from Ancestry records. Amphelice is recordred as having 9 children and I can account for them all but no Margaret

I think that other than minor amendments to the basic data, any doubts should be expressed under a separate heading in the bio, where misgivings can be aired. ANy major changes should be as a coperative effort by the PMs or other mnagers identified by g2g

Thanks, Patrick, that is helpful :-) But let’s wait and see if anyone comes up with some good evidence in the next few days in response to my G2G question.

I am making the odd Minor factual correction: Hadleigh was in Suffolk, not Middlesex as stated in one or two places, and Suffolk does not have Co. after it.

Incidentally, historians believe Pennington Castle, mentioned at several points, was abandoned several centuries before this. But I do not want to get drawn into the children of the Thomas of this profile.

I'm fine with marking the relationship as uncertain. It may be beneficial to remember that Wikitree is (as the "Wiki" suggests) a free, community-shared site, not a professional, for-pay genealogy site. Therefore, it's best to err on the side of generosity. This site is not a be-all, end-all, but rather a tool for the community to explore their possible ancestry.

We should see what replies there are to the question I have asked in G2G: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/951061/wives-of-thomas-taylor-son-of-marian-martyr-rowland-taylor. Unless a good source emerges, or you have a good source yourself, the absolute minimum is to mark the relationship as uncertain and say there is no reliable evidence for it. The bio itself highlights in the first two sentences the absence of firm birth info for the Thomas of this profile. We need to follow the evidence, or lack of it, and reflect that on WikiTree.

I ask that you leave the relationship as is, and note your disagreement in the bio.

At the moment I am afraid there is no evidence for the father-son relationship between the two Thomas Taylors. As the Honor Code says, we aim to be accurate and to rely on good sourcing. As I said, what I am envisaging is standard practice on WikiTree, and it makes it easy to reinstate the relationship if a reasonable source for it is found. It ensures that there is a record on the relevant profiles that the relationship has previously been shown, so there is no question of information being lost.

There are, I regret, masses of false descents in trees on the web - and in some books - from Marian martyrs.

However, there are other people on this site who may disagree with you; I think it would be best to avoid autocratic erasure of information. It would be best to voice your skepticism, while leaving room for others to explore their findings. Remember: this is a community site.

The way I am proposing to operate is what would be normal good practice for WikiTree. I am afraid none of the sources in this profile provide any good evidence for the Thomas of this profile being a son of Thomas son of the martyr Rowland Taylor. If someone comes up with a reasonable source in response to my G2G question, that would of course change things.

I think it would be best to leave the relationship as is; if you feel it best, perhaps you could note skepticism in the biography.

I have looked into this and there appears to be no good evidence that this Thomas was son of Thomas son of the Marian martyr Rowland Taylor. There are a lot of fictitious descents from Marian martyrs and there is a lot of misinformation on the web. I have asked a question in G2G about Thomas the son of Rowland the martyr: subject to the answers to that, I am proposing to sever the Thomas of this profile from his currently shown father, adding research notes to relevant profiles so that if some good evidence does later emerge, relationships can be re-established. The Cranes Foot book has easily demonstrable errors for Rowland the martyr’s children and should not be trusted.
