Biography

Grandmother of James Madison 4th President of the United States

Ambrose Madison married Frances Taylor, daughter of Col. James Taylor Jr. and Martha Thompson Taylor on 24 Aug 1721 in King and Queen County, Virginia. The Madison family moved to the plantation in 1732 after a house had been built and tobacco cultivation had started. They had several children, and their oldest son was James Madison, Sr., the future father of U.S. President James Madison.[1]

James Sr’s two younger sisters, Frances and Elizabeth married into substantial families. Frances Madison wed first Taverner Beale and second Jacob Hite. Elizabeth Madison wed first john Willis and second Richard Beale. [2]

Frances' husband died at age 36 after a short illness, on August 27, 1732. She was left with a large plantation and 29 slaves. She never remarried.

Frances was born 30 Aug 1700. She died Nov 1761 in Mount Pleasant, Orange County, Virginia from smallpox and was buried Nov 1761 in Madison Family Cemetery.

Association of this line of Taylors to the town of Rapidan is an internet myth. The town of Rapidan, Virginia was not settled until the latter half of the 18th Century, and there is no record that James Taylor II & Martha Thompson ever resided in Rapidan. Their children were probably born in King and Queen County. Orange County was not formed until 1734 from part of Spotsylvania County, which was not formed until 1721 from portions of King and Queen, Essex, and King William Counties.

Taylor-31790 and Taylor-2 appear to represent the same person because: This merge request was part of a long line of merges in a branch of the family. All of the profiles were unsourced, but, when part of the bigger branch, obviously meant to be the same people. Because the merges were not done in the order of oldest ancestor to newest, the "simplicity" of this merge has been lost. The data on Taylor-2 should be used to complete this merge. While dates are not primarily sourced, there is enough data to support those dates.
