William was born about 1845 in Massachusetts.
Private in Company A of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 18 years old, single and working as a farmer when he enlisted on 18 December 1863 in Tyringham, Massachusetts. Discharged 8 June 1865 by order of USA Surgeon from the general hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina.
He passed away in 1888 and is buried at Tyringham Cemtery in Tyringham, Massachusetts.
