Ivy was born in 1903[1]. She married Alfred Brown 22 March 1922[2].She passed away in 1986.
Ivy did well at school and became a pupil teacher for a while but left to work on the local farms. She helped on the threshing machine and it was said that she could work as well as the men.
she kept diaries often mentioning the birds she had heard and seen and the weather. At times she recorded the price paid for eggs etc. Her son extracted the more interesting entries into a diary that her granddaughter is transcribing.
When her husband was farming at Grange Farm, Owston, Leicestershire she kept the chickens and guinea foul. She had some mod cons in the 1950s such as a top loading washing machine that doubled up a a dishwasher. This was kept in the scullery along with the butter churn .

Grandma was a young grandma to me, being the eldest grandchild, she always had time for her grandchildren, my sister and I were the only ones for a long time as Dad was so much older. She could tell us so much about birds songs and nests etc.
