Biography

"In 1788 when David was 15 years old the family moved to near Holidaysburg in Bedford(now Blair Co. Pa.).Many other families of the church moved there at about the same time and we find names such as Miller, Cripe, Stutsman, Frantz etc. Most of these men were famers and many were preachers as well.

"Here David grew to manhood and met and married Eizabeth Stutsman--dau.o. Jacob and Christina Ulrich Stutsman and grandaughter of Jacob and Hannah Stutsman and Stephen and Elizabeth Ulrich.

"The census of 1800 shows David and Elizabeth and 4 children in Somerset Co. Pa. Then another move probably about 1804 Or 1805, this time to So. Ohio where land records show that they purchased land in Montgomery Co. in 1806. They lived for some time in this area and owned other land. Our ancestor, John Stutsman Deeter was born, it is believed in Prebble Co., German twp. about2 or 3 miles S.W. of Farmersville, O. on Sept. 6,1813. In Sept. of 1815 his parents sold this property and bought the Sugar Grove farm in Miami Co., Newton twp. O. David donated a corner of his farm as the location for a church and for a cemetery. The oldest grave in the cemetery was one for his first-born child Susannah who for some reason he did not name in his bible record.

"David was a farmer and preacher [of the German Baptist Brethren] and preached in the German language which was also spoken in the home. Elizabeth was a leader among the women in the community and often served as a midwife. They lived here on the Sugar Grove farm the rest of their lives and most of their children lived nearby.

"A short time after the Deeter family had arrived in the area the John Reed family came to the community from Virginia. The story goes that the two families lived across the road from each other. Three of the Deeter 'boys' married three of the Reed girls and a Reed son married a Deeter daughter. There were many first cousins having the same blood relationship as brothers and sisters.

"One of David's grandsons was heard to remark that these marriages were so successful because the Reed girls were 'horses for work' and The Deeter boys liked to sit in the fence-corners and read!" (Eller 1981, p 13)

"Elder Michael Etter [the first minister of the German Baptist Brethren in Covington OH] emigrated from Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, [in] the early part of the eighteenth century and settled on the farm just north of the present Sugar Grove Church. ... [Soon] he was joined by Elder David Deeter, also from Pennsylvania, who entered the farm adjacent to Sugar Grove on the west. ... Elder David Deeter proved to be a very desirable and congenial co-worker with Elder Etter. ... His wife is referred to as a most devoted Christian companion; the mother of thirteen children. Elder David Deeter died in May, 1849, just two years after his worthy co-laborer Etter. The death of these two faithful shepherds, occurring so closely together, was keenly felt." (History 1921, pp 196-197)

Burial: Sugar Grove Cemetery, Covington, Miami County, Ohio, USA.
