Harold was born in 1915. [1]
Early in 1940 with the war getting steadily worse, he married Geraldine Bartrop. The marriage was registered at Cuckfield in Sussex. [2]
In 1971 he and the American, Elliott H. Lieb, introduced the Temperley-Lieb algebra in order to build certain transfer matrices. This algebra also has links with knot theory and the braid group, quantum groups and subfactors of von Neumann algebras. [3]
In 1992 he was awarded the Rumford Medal by the Royal Society "1992 HNV Temperley. In recognition of his wide-ranging and imaginative contributions to applied mathematics and statistical physics, especially in the physical properties of liquids and the development of the Temperley-Lieb algebra." [4]
He passed away on the 27th of March 2017 [5] aged 102. [6]
"TEMPERLEY Neville he died peacefully, at his family home, on 27th March, aged 102, after many years of devoted care from Deirdre and others. Much-loved father, father-in law, grandfather and great-grandfather. Thanksgiving service at St Martins" Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 3, 2017. [7]
"Neville was one of the most important collaborators I have had. He was an unusually innovative, deep thinking mathematical physicist who thought 'outside the box' and made many important contributions to the field. His unique style will probably not be seen again and will be sorely missed." Elliott Lieb, Princeton, May 4, 2017 [7]
