Biography

Sampson M. Tenney, a Civil War Veteran, was born in Mercer County, Illinois, March 2, 1841, and died June 12, 1926, at La Crescentia, California. He was 85 years old, 3 months, 10 days old. Burial was in the Ida Grove Cemetery, Ida County, Iowa. He was a member of the Matthew Gray Post # 93 in Ida Grove, Iowa.

In 1862, Tenney enlisted in Co. C of the 102nd Illinois Infantry, and served 3 years in the war. He was with Sherman on his famous March to the Sea, participated in the battles of Atlanta, Champaign, and Peachtree Creek.

His parents were Joseph P. Tenney and Almira Merryman Tenney, natives of New Hampshire and Maine. There were 10 children in the family, of whom only 2 survive, Maria J. Tenney of California, and L. L. Tenney of Cherokee, Iowa.

In 1875, Sampson was married in Mercer County, IL. to Miss Anna Baker who was his helpmate until 20 years ago when she died in Ida County. The family came to Ida County in the fall of 1883, and settled on the 320 acre farm in Grant Township, which Mr. Tenney bought in 1882 when it was raw prairie land. Later on Mr. Tenney sold this and invested in the farm in Blaine Township which he sold to his son, Charles, about 20 years ago. At this time, the older Mr. Tenney retired and has spent most of the time since then in traveling between California and Florida making visits with his children, and frequently remaining for considerable periods in Ida Grove.

Mr. Tenney is survived by four children, Mrs. Louise Baron, La Crescentia, California; Edgar and Florence of Chicago, Illinois; and Charles P. Tenney of Ida Grove, Iowa. There are 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services were at the home of his son, Charles P. Tenney, Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. It was a military funeral in charge of the American Legion and Chaplain C. A. Van Griethuysen. A Firing squad paid the last honors at the grave.
