The 1900 census shows that John and Cornelia had been married for about 9 years, but John had a 25-year-old son and a 20-year-old daughter, presumably from a previous marriage. His father was born in New Hampshire and his mother in Massachusetts.

The 1910 census list John R. and Nellie "Muir" in Philadelphia, with her only daughter 19-year-old Eleanor S. All born in Pennsylvania, and their parents too. He was a salesman of wholesale drugs.
The 1930 census lists his wife as a widow.
