Biography

Daniel Tenny was born March 2, 1689-90 in Bradford, Massachusetts to Daniel and Elizabeth Stickney) Tenney.[1][2]

He married Priscilla Wood November 28, 1711, in Newbury, Massachusetts.[3]

Daniel and Priscilla had 6 children, all but the first born in Rowley,[4] and baptized in Newbury:[5][6]

  • Stephen, baptized 1 Nov 1713 in Bradford, [7][2] (See research note below.)
  • Priscilla, born 1 August 1714, baptized 8 Aug 1714
  • Richard, born 28 March 1716, baptized 1 Apr 1716
  • Bethia, born 22 March 1718, baptized 30 Mar 1718; married Thomas Plummer, Jr. Nov 8, 1739
  • Sarah, born 18 September 1719, baptized 27 Sep 1719; married John Brocklebank of Rowley, June 1, 1738
  • Daniel, born 21 May 1721, baptized 28 May 1721

Daniel married second Elizabeth Bailey, January 2, 1721-22 in Newbury, Massachusetts.[2]

Daniel and Elizabeth Tenney had two recorded children: [8]

  • Nathaniel, bp. 28 Oct 1722, apparently died in infancy
  • Nathaniel, born 27 or 29 Jan 1723-24, baptized 2 Feb 1723-4

Daniel died March 21, 1756 in Rowley, Massachusetts.[9]

In his will, dated 22 Apr 1752 and proved 12 Apr 1756, Daniel Tenney left half the real estate and income from it to Elizabeth during her widowhood. He left all his land, buildings, share in the cornmill, and the role of executor, to his youngest son Nathaniel. He left sums of money to four other children (presumably the only ones still living?), in the following order. " to son Stephen, £40; to son Daniel £26, 13s, 5d; to daughter Bethiah Plummer, £4, 9s, 5d and a mourning suit; to daughter "Sarah Brocklebank, £5, 9s, 4d and a mourning suit."[2]

Research Notes

One source cited in this profile. M.J. Tenney's 1904 book.[2] says that son Stephen was born in 1722 just before being baptized in the Byfield church on 28 Oct 1722. But that overlooks the recorded birth of Stephen in Bradford, and appears to misread the record of that baptism in the Rowley vital records, which clearly (in the transcription, anyway) show the baptism of Nathaniel on that day. Looking at those records, and at the size of the bequests and the order in which the children are mentioned in the father's will, Stephen seems clearly elder than his brother Daniel. The best reading of those facts seems to be that Stephen Tenney was born in 1713, not 1722.
