Biography

Born in Munich Germany, she moved to Dusseldorf and then Frieburg as her father got better and better professorships.

Known as Gretchen she moved with her family to Brookline, MA (Boston) in 1935 to escape Hitler. Her father was Jewish and her mother was Catholic. They left behind her beloved governess, know as "Dada," Fraulein Huber, who had raised her from a baby. This was very hard on her. She went to the Winsor School in Boston (http://www.winsor.edu/) which prepared her well for a distinguished career at Radcliffe. She also got a masters in art history from Harvard and worked as an art critic for Art News magazine until about 1955.

An excerpt: "Margaret Thannhauser Munson, known as Gretchen, was a magna cum laude Radcliffe graduate, art critic, former chairwoman of the Ladies Village Improvement Society Fair, and former member of the Maidstone Club.

“She was a stalwart at the L.V.I.S. Fair,” her family wrote. “She started working in the book booth, then organized that booth, and ultimately became chairwoman of the entire fair.”
