George Thompson was born on 30 Oct 1846 in St Albans, New South Wales, Australia as the third child of Matthew George Thompson and Elizabeth Fernance. He had fourteen siblings, namely: Thomas John, Frances, Matthew, William James, Richard Henry, Ann Elizabeth, Charles Joseph, Pearson Edward, Alfred Andrew, Mary Jane, John Arthur, David Prosper, Henry Herbert, and Isabella Sarah. He died on 13 Mar 1909 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. When he was 18, he married Mary Preston,daughter of Joseph Preston and Hannah O'Donnell, on 20 May 1865 in St Albans, New South Wales, Australia.
