Jack’s father was keen for his son to have a trade and so he approached a local Jeweller in Stanthorpe to teach Jack the trade. In those days parents of the youth had to pay the Jeweller to teach him and so Jack became a Jeweller. There was already a Jeweller in this small town and Jack didn’t want to leave his home town so his father arranged for Jack to be trained as a mechanic in one of the garages in town. Jack was a quick learner and in time had his own Garage and Taxi Service in Stanthorpe where he employed his brothers. The taxis were mainly used to take the shearers out to the sheep properties in the district and beyond Stanthorpe.
