Swanbrook, Aug 9th, ‘88

“My Dear Cousin,

I now write a line or two in answer to your welcome letter and I hope Bill that you will forgive me for not writing sooner, but I haven’t been at home lately. I have been away carrying. I hope you are all quite well. The children all have the cold here yet. Oh, Bill I have bad news to tell you this time, two of Uncle Matt’s children are dead, Annie and the only boy, the baby, poor little dears. Annie died at three o’clock on Friday evening (3 Aug 1888), and the baby at five o’clock on Saturday morning, (William Earl 4 Aug 1888) . It was the (w)hooping cough and then turned to inflammation of the lungs. They were buried last Sunday at one o’clock. They took sick two or three days after you and John went home. Bessie is very sick too, and the other two as well, sick I mean. Two little things! I cannot help dropping tears as I am writing to you. Oh, Bill they did suffer. We did all we could for them, but it was God’s will that they should go to a better home above. I wish, I wish I had received that summons when I was a little child. Uncle Mat(t) had Dr. Lane out four times. I have plenty news to tell you, but I cannot tell you this time. I will soon write again. Emma Woodbery told me to tell John a long, long yarn about her. I will tell you next time. I will tell you the truth. Also the song from Geo. Preston, he is going to have a great fight next Saturday with Leonard in town. Isn’t this dreadful weather. I think we will get no wheat. I have not come to see you yet. But I will come as soon as I can. But now I must draw to a close. So now Goodnight and Goodbye. Give my love to all, not forgetting Yourself, I remain Your true Cousin Geo. Goldman.
