Biography

Barney Thomas Thompson, of Plainfield, died at his home February 20, 2023. He was 67.

Born August 14, 1955, in Aalen, Germany, he was the son of Barney Ralph Thompson and Heidi Marie Kaser. Barney grew up in Indianapolis and Whiteland, Indiana, graduating from Whiteland Community High School in 1973. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army and served overseas in Germany.

After completing military service, Barney returned to Indianapolis and received a Master of Library Science degree from Indiana University. There, he met his future wife, Rita Angela Gurdian, whom he married in 1988. Barney worked as a reference librarian at the Indiana State Library until an early retirement due to disability. He received a successful liver transplant in 2001 and survived the Hepatitis C virus.

Barney was a brilliant man who had many talents and interests. In his younger days, he enjoyed playing sports (especially wrestling), fishing, and traveling to state and national parks for camping and outdoor activities. Barney’s main passion was genealogical research, which he continued throughout his life. In 1995, he published a comprehensive book tracing his paternal ancestral line back to the 18th century.

Survivors include his sisters, Anne Taylor of Indianapolis, Carmen Reichard of Byrdstown, Tenn. and husband Ron, Darlene Paradise and husband Mike of Morgantown; wife Rita Thompson of Avon; daughter Lauren Lamb and husband Mike of Carmel; son Brian Thompson of Indianapolis; and grandchildren Elise, Adam, Abigail, and Ian Lamb.

The family has arranged for a visitation for Barney to be held from 11 am - 12 pm on Monday, February 27, at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 17102 Spring Mill Road, Westfield, Ind. 46074. The funeral Mass will then follow at the church, with Fr. Kevin Haines presiding. Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood will be Barney’s final resting place.

Hi Barney,

Just found out we're 12th cousins through the Hatcher line, but I've got "Sauter" in my tree too! Maybe, that particular line will be found soon.

Hello,

I am a WT Ranger and observed some of your profile removals and mergers today (one example: Ehegartner-11). I am not sure of your intent based on your remarks, "Clear duplicate", but they were not duplicates. Some members like to recycle/repurpose profiles. Here's the link to the Help space for that. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Recycling_WikiTree_IDs

Hi,

It’s Germany Project check-in time again! Please respond within the next 2 weeks and let me know if you’re still interested in participating with the Project. Remember, the only requirements for membership in the Germany Project are (1) that you work on at least one German profile every 6 months and (2) that you respond to this check-in.

Since you’re not working with one of our Sub-projects or Teams yet, please look at our main Project page for a full list and let me know which team you’d like to join.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. In your response, we welcome any feedback you may want to give on the project (what you like about it, what you’d like to see us do, what we could change, etc.)

If you ever have any questions, please ask. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Hi Barney,

I have hit a brick wall. My grandmother, Johanna Igel, was the daughter of Caroline Konrad/Conrad, who was the spouse of Johann(?) Igel. I can not definitively identify either Johann's or Caroline's parents.

A clue is that Johanna married Charles Edward Carlton, who was saved from the Chicago fire of 1871. I hit a brick wall there, too, other than to determine his father was Charles D. Carlton who saved his son and then perished in the fire. The archives people in Illinois could offer little assistance since birth, marriage and death records also perished in the fire. Thus, I have been unable to progress further in the Carlton lineage.

Hoping you might have some insight on the Igel side, in particular.

Many thanks, Bob Chase

Hello B.,

I've seen that you've posted quite a lot of information about the biehringer family in the past months and would like to know if you have more information in regards to this. The reason behind this is that I am Marcel Manfred Biehringer and now that my ancestors have lived in the area described in your sources for at least 100 years, most probably longer after what I've seen today. The issue is that my knowledge ends with Anton Biehringer, my great grandfather, who was born in 1921, date of death uncertain. This means there would be one generation gap between my Anton and yours. Any information you could provide would be highly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Marcel

Hello B!

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz! Pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, thus coordinating with others is essential.

I see you have joined the German_roots Project. Excellent choice, as I was about to suggest this project for you. Thank you for joining to work with the project.. It has many sub-projects.

If you have questions, just ask!

B.,

Thomas Thompson "Jr" page says he died BEFORE 1810. This means our best information is that he was no longer living in 1810. If you have better information please share it, with your sources. We are extremely anxious to have the best possible information available with first source records in every case. However when individuals upload their gedcom files from other sites with undocumented assertions we do our best to make them correct as we are able to find better sources. Please help us make this the best it can be by providing your sources.
