Elizabeth Mendenhall was daughter of Stephen and Sarah Mendenhall and a granddaughter of John and Susannah Pearson Mendenhall. This is proven in Deep River Monthly Meeting records in Guilford County, North Carolina where

Stephen, born 10/19/1721,
Edward Thornbrough born in Chester Co, Pa. but haven't found proof yet died abt. 1799.
Elizabeth Mendenhall born on 3/2/1751 in Chester Co, Pa; died after 1795.
They married on 4/5/1769 per New Garden Monthly Meeting notes of Rowan County, North Carolina.

John and his sister Elizabeth were both excommunicated from the Quaker faith because they married non members of the faith. John married Susannah Starnes and Elizabeth married Susannah's brother John Starnes. John changed the spelling of his name from Thornsburgh, which was a well known Quaker name, to Thornsberry to avoid any further embarrassment to his family.

John's father Edward Thornsburgh was so angry after his son John and daughter Elizabeth' marriage out of the faith, that he was also excommunicated

Research Notes

I incorrectly listed Walter as John's parent. The Quaker records prove this false. Another's research notes found here [[2]] support this; "The first record of Walter Thornbrough is on a 1729 tax list in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was single and had probably just turned 21 (source for possible birth date of 1708). His father had been added to tax lists in Chester County in 1722. He also signed the marriage certificates of his brothers Thomas & Robert Thornbrough when they married Davis sisters on 10/11/1729. This would also indicate he was at least 21. The names are all given as Thornbury and Robert and Thomas were of Thornbury Township (note it is a myth that the township was named for this family. It was so named long before they came and was named after a place in England.) That Walter is a son of Edward Thornbrough is confirmed by Edward's will in 1734 where he left one ewe and one lamb to Walter. The name is given as Thornbrugh in this will."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Thornbrugh-21 and Thornberry-88 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth and death years and places, same wife. Current last names similar if not identical....
