Biography

E. Sydney Thorne was born 18 June 1850 at Spring Bay, son of Robert Thorne of Lewisham and a nephew of William Hobart Thorne, the first white child born in the Port Phillip district, in 1803, when Collins’ party attempted to begin a settlement there. An egret shot at Sorell was presented to the Museum of Tasmania in June 1872.. [The Mercury, 17 June 1872] Sydney Thorne was given the tender for conveyance of mail between Sorell and Port Arthur in 1873. [The Gazette, 9 September 1873] The storm of the past week has left its marks betweeen Sorell and Port Arthur. Two bridges between Norfolk Bay and the settlement were entirely swept away, whilst one between Eagle Hawk and Norfolk Bay, and another between Eagle Hawk and the Sounds, shared a similar fate. So great was the fury of the storm that the old sentry-box at that point at Eagle Hawk Neck known as The Gut, was swept clean away, and some 200 or 300 tons of kelp, with any quantity of mackerel, were, as with the force of a tidal wave, washed up and left upon the shore. So great indeed was the danger that the Commandant did not deem it safe to allow the mail contractor, Mr Sydney Thorne, to leave with the Port Arthur mails for a day beyond the proper time. [The Mercury, 11 May 1874] For a time Sydney and Jane lived in the Sorell district, where Sydney was a farmer 1875 to 77 and a police constable at New Norfolk 1879 to after 1888 when he was stationed at South Bridgewater, but most of their lives were spent in the Bellerive area. There were seven children, one dying in infancy. Edward Sydney Thorne died on 12 March 1911 at his residence 170 Argyle Street Hobart, leaving his assets to his wife Janet (sic) who died 19 August 1942 aged 96 at Bellerive.
