Biography

Nathaniel Thornton was born about 1737 in Duplin County, North Carolina (or elsewhere if his father immigrated circa 1747) to Thomas and Martha Thornton.[1]

Nathaniel married a Selah (Celia) around 1760 most likely in Duplin. There isn't much information available on Nathaniel nor his children.

He died sometime before 1790 in Duplin County, North Carolina. There is a Nathaniel Thornton listed on the 1790 census and the age given on the 1790 census indicates that Nathaniel was born before 1774 which would fit both Nathaniel's, however, with 4 males under age 16 (born circa 1774-1790) and only 1 male over age 16, it seems to lean more towards the younger Nathaniel born circa 1756-1765.[2]

I think it is highly possible Nathaniel Thornton married Sealy West, the daughter of Robert West of Johnston County. His will was probated in 1790 and mentioned a daughter, Sealy Thornton. The record below was a confession by Joseph Killett during the Revolutionary War. Selah (Sealy?_ Thornton was listed as one of those harboring dissenters during the war. She is listed with the Joyners, Peter Lee, and William McClam. They all lived near Peacock Swamp in Duplin County...near Nathaniel Thornton.
