Leads for Further Research
Dr. Wm. Stubbs provides strong documented evidence that Susannah was the wife of Michael Peasley of New Pocosin Parish with children Henry and Elizabeth. Mordecay / Mordecai married Susanna and became Elizabeth's Guardian (with Henry probably of legal majority ant the time). Susannah and Mordecai are known to have had at least five children: Mordecai (b. c. 1648 or 9), Thomas, Elizabeth (m. Richard Buckner of Essex, and clerk of House of Burgess), Giles, John[1]
Statements that appear supportable but citation for will & patent are needed (Stubbs may have included primary sources in his book):[1]
Michael Peasley (d 1647). According to Michael's will, they had two children, Henry and Elizabeth. Provision is made in Michael's will for a guardian for daughter Elizabeth, but not for Henry. In 1648 Henry patented 250 acres of land in York County. These records indicate Henry was at least age 21 in 1647, born c 1626.
Biography needing better sourcing -
Susannah Peasley Thrasher was born abt 1625 in Gloucester, Gloucester, Virginia, United States. She is the daughter of Robert Earl Thrasher (1603-1657) and Isabell Elizabeth (Painter) Thrasher (1603-1680).
Susannah married Michael Peasley in 1643 in Gloucester, Gloucester, Virginia, United States. Michael and Susanah Peasley were the parents of 2 known children, Henry and Elizabeth. Michael died in May, 1647.
Susannah married Mordecai Cooke (1623-1667) at Mordecais Mt, Gloucester, Virginia, USA in 1648.
Morecai Cooke and Susannah Cooke are the parents of the following known children: Mordecai, Susan, Frances, Giles, John and Thomas Cooke.
Susannah died abt 1670 in Mordecais Mount, Gloucester, Virginia, United States.[2]
Birth: Birth date of 1625 changed to c1608 and "Gloucester" removed from birth location based on this comment: Need to revise Susannah's birth date. She was widow of Michael Peasley (d 1647). His mother, Susannah, absolutely could not have been born in 1625. [Stubbs, p 22] And She obviously was not born in Gloucester County, since that county was formed from York in 1651.
Maiden name: It looks like Susanna's maiden name was Giles. She was the widow of a man named Peasley before marrying Mordecai Cooke. Also some sites say she was Susanna Thrasher at some time in her life. M. Stack

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Susannah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Susannah:
Research notes include a section headed "Maiden name", which says
It looks like Susanna's maiden name was Giles. She was the widow of a man named Peasley before marrying Mordecai Cooke. Also some sites say she was Susanna Thrasher at some time in her life.
Stubbs cites Peasley's will, which apparently names his wife Susanna & children Henry and Elizabeth.
If I recall correctly, I think Stubbs cited orphan court records to support Susanna's subsequent marriage to Mordecai Cooke (he became guardian of her daughter Elizabeth Peasley).
Do we have any reliable sources for the surnames Giles or Thrasher/Thresher?
I've looked through my on-hand sources and cannot find where Giles or Thrasher/Thresher came from at this time. I still have tons of boxes of research that came with me from California to Virginia and if they haven't been destroyed by the floods here (praying), hopefully, I can find the sources there, but will need some time.
Thanks Sjana! As someone once messaged me when I was angsting over a profile: What's the hurry? She'll still be dead tomorrow! (I've got my fingers crossed your research papers survived the floods!)
Question: Why in the Bio it has parents, Susannah Peasley Thrasher was born abt 1625 in Gloucester, Gloucester, Virginia, United States. She is the daughter of Robert Earl Thrasher (1603-1657) and Isabell Elizabeth (Painter) Thrasher (1603-1680). but on the profile it says unknown
ooh - what's your source for Robert & Isabell (Painter) Thrasher as parents? I couldn't find anything that supported who her parents were.
(Just reviewed the posted biography... the text saying her parents were Robert & Elizabeth and the rest of that should be under Research notes - even the first paragraph is poorly sourced, but it doesn't state anything as controversial as who her parents were. Also not sure where the c1608 birth year came from - possible but not likely for a woman with children born as late as 1654, although that birth year for John is also unsupported.)
update - I've redone the bio, moving everything without a primary source citation to Research Notes (meaning everything is under Research Notes now).
Need to revise Susannah's birth date. She was widow of Michael Peasley (d 1647). His mother, Susannah, absolutely could not have been born in 1625. It's been a while & no response. I intend to detach Elizabeth (Cooke) Buckner from the profiles of Mordecai Cooke and Susanna (the death dates on their profiles are earlier than Elizabeth's birth year on her profile).
Daughter Elizabeth's birth date is well past her death date now (and her husband's). A comment on her profile, which has her living in 1753 - as the widow Buckner - says that primary proof is needed to assign her to correct Cooke family.
In the meantime, should we disconnect her as daughter & just leave the link to Cooke-52 in the text with a footnote to see her profile?
her FindAGrave memorial does not currently mention a deed, but the Geni entry for her (which appears to be based on FindAGrave) includes the following text:
Mordecai first lived in Elizabeth City, Virginia in 1639, where he appeares in 1645 as a witness in a suit. he next appears in 1646 in York County, Virginia. His wife Susannah was previously married to Michael Peasley and they had two children, Henry and Elizabeth. Michael's will was probated on 22 May 1647 in Gloucester County, Virginia, leaving his wife Susannah a widow. No record of Susannah's maiden name was found. After her marriage to Mordecai, he became guardian for Elizabeth but not Henry (indicating he was 21 y/o). On 2 Oct 1650 Mordecai patented land on Mock-Jock Bay, 1174 acres. This became the family seat known as "Mordecai Mount", in Gloucester County, Virginia. In 1667, Susannah's name appears in a patent with land next to theirs, so Mordecai had already died before then.
These four children were born after Susannah's date of death; Mordecai Cooke II, Elizabeth (Cooke) Buckner, Giles Cooke and John Cook. Thomas was born same year as her death, believe error on date of death since bio has it as 1670, which would have allowed her to have given birth to all of the above children.
not an error - same man with two different birth years suggested (see the "date estimate" box on the profile page for Cooke-585). An inactive manager means she'll need to wait 30 days (well, less now) before they can be merged into a single profile. Thanks for your timely merging Michael!
Peasley-12 and Thresher-16 appear to represent the same person because: these are the same person. Thresher as LNAB is not certain, but we know she was the widow Peasley (so it is certain that Peasley was not her maiden name). Please merge. Thanks!
from everything I've found found on Mordecai, he married the widow Peasley, so Peasley is definitely wrong as her LNAB. She may or may not have been born "Thresher" but that's a better choice. A previously proposed merge of Thresher/Peasley resulted in this profile (still Peasley). Before proposing a merge with Thresher-16, I think it should be protected so that we wind up with Thresher-16 instead of Peasley-12. If no objection, I'll ask a Leader to protect Thresher-16 tomorrow. Cheers, Liz
