GEORGE TIMBLIN OBITUARY

George Alvin Timblin, 65, entered the church triumphant on September 1, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born January 29, 1941, in Butler County, PA, he was the son of the late William Cecil Timblin and Beulah Rankin Timblin. Surviving are his loving wife of 37 years, Carol Lowe Timblin; son Brandon Timblin and his wife Risa of Durham; daughter Alison Timblin of Charlotte; grandsons Justin, Michael, Weslee, and Andre; sister Hazel Timblin Townsend and her husband Earle of Greenville, SC; brother Stanley Timblin and his wife Evelyn of Greensboro; nephews Jeff Timblin, Steve (Kathy) Timblin and Walter (Barbara) Townsend; nieces Susan Townsend, Dianne (Jamie) Lewis, and Sara (Alan) Luchuk, as well as several great nieces and nephews, many cousins, and countless friends who loved him dearly. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. at McEwen Funeral Service Mint Hill Sunday evening. The funeral will be held Monday at 11 A.M. at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church in Mint Hill, with the Rev. Chuck Williamson and the Rev. Lee Koontz officiating, followed by interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Timblin attended Butler County Schools until he moved with his family to Durham County, NC, in 1953. After graduating from Northern High School, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Duke University in 1962 and a Master of Education degree from UNC-Charlotte in 1975. Following his graduation from Duke University, he worked for a year as a Junior Test Engineer for Duquesne Light Company in Pittsburgh, PA. From 1963 until 1966, he served as a Design Engineer on NASA's Saturn V booster rocket for the moon shot at The Boeing Company in New Orleans, LA. During 1966-1970, he served as a Senior Aircraft Instrumentation Engineer on the C-5A and C-141A projects at Lockheed-Georgia Company in Marietta, GA. In 1970, he joined the faculty of Central Piedmont Community College as an Electrical & Electronics Engineering Technology instructor, and during his 31-career there had many leadership roles, including Program Director and Division Director and Assistant Dean in the Engineering Technologies Division. When he retired In 2001, he was Interim Dean of the Engineering and Transportation Technologies Department. His contributions to CPCC were myriad, including leading the development of the Advanced Technologies Center and the Apprenticeship 2000 program. He received CPCC's Administrator of the Year Award in 1990 and the CIM Leadership Award from IBM Corp. in 1994. Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Timblin served in numerous leadership positions of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) and in 2001 was elected a Fellow Member. He received the James H. McGraw Award in Engineering Technology Education from ASEE in 1993 and the ETDA/ASEE Recognition Award from ASEE in 2002. He also served as President and Board Member of the Charlotte Engineers Club and in 1996 received its Distinguished Service Award. He was also a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). As a special consultant, Mr. Timblin worked on projects for several colleges and universities and numerous national organizations, including the National Science Foundation, the American Association of Community Colleges, ABET Technological Initiative, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Though his accomplishments were monumental, Mr. Timblin remained a kind, gentle and unselfish person. He will be remembered best for his beautiful smile, his generous and courageous spirit, his love and devotion to his family, friends, church and community, his appreciation of history, and his enjoyment of music, nature, photography and train travel. He led an exemplary life and touched the lives of everyone he met. Mr. Timblin was a long-time member of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church and was active in the Mint Hill Historical Society. Over the past three years, he led the ongoing restoration of church's two historic cemeteries. Memorials may be made to the Historic Cemeteries Committee of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, 11501 Bain School Rd., Mint Hill, NC 28227. The family wishes to thank Dr. James Boyd and the staff of Oncology Associates of Charlotte and the many friends and neighbors who supported them during Mr. Timblin's illness.
