Research Notes

note: by Rick Waggener, direct descendant: John Waggener was most likely born in Culpeper County, but it is possible that he might have been born in Spotsylvania County. His parents moved from Spotsylvania County to Culpeper County, some time during this time period. Certainly he grew up in Culpeper and later met and married his wife Sarah Garnett there.

The estate of his parents, James Herbert and Ann (Jones) Waggener, was on the north side of the Rapidan River, just east of the "Horseshoe Plantation," the estate of Sarah's parents, Robert "Robin" and Lucy (Towles) Garnett. John lived on this estate, the entire time he lived in Culpeper County, including after his marriage to Sarah in 1785.

His parents gave him the estate in 1795, which he in turn mortgaged out to his siblings the next year, as an apparent way of dividing it. There is a fairly detailed description of this tract of land below.

In 1804, after the death of his father, John sold apparently all of his land in Culpeper County, including what had been his parent's plantation. It appears that he had a pretty sizable amount of money and other property at the time.

In early 1805, he moved to Adair County, Kentucky, apparently with his younger brother Herbert and perhaps a large group of families. It appears that their mother Ann (Jones) Waggener, remained in Virginia, apparently living with one of her daughters Lucy (White) or Mary (Jones) in Madison County.

In 1805, John and Herbert appear on the Personal Property Tax List in Adair County, Kentucky. In 1806, they both are listed as owning land in Adair County.

John apparently lived the rest of his life in Adair County. He reportedly died there at age 65, and is buried in the Waggener Cemetery on the Charles Tupman Farm. It is not known when or where Sarah died.
