According to "A Brief History of The Townsen Family" written by Dr. John Garrett Townsen, James Garrett Townsen was married to Mary Agnes Mitchell and had 10 sons and 1 daughter. He was a member of the Christian church, a farmer, a school teacher and was the superintendent of the poor farm in Carroll county Tennessee for a number of years.
