Biography

James Townsend was born on July 2, 1671, in Boston, Massachusetts, his father, Thomas, was 34 and his mother, Mary, was 24. He married Mary Lynks and they had three children together. He then married Alice Newell and they had nine children together. He died on April 18, 1738, in his hometown at the age of 66, and was buried there.

Sept. 4, 1666 his father conveyed 3 acres in Roxbury on Dedham highway and two other larger parcels with house on one. Conveyance was in considerationof six £ per annum to be paid to Abraham and Susan his wife during life and to survivors if they stand in need of money. Refers to new house on 16 acre lot -- later burned. Think it same land later deeded by heirs of Abraham to James Townsend and Alice.

James Townsend's birth is not recorded but parentage is deter-mined by the administrators account of his estate. Thomas Bentley was adm. and credits estate with share of Caleb Townsend's (brother of deceased) estate. Caleb died a few weeks after James. Bentley was also appointed, Apr. 9, 1744, gdn. of the Widow Alice Townsend who was "non compos mentes."

Adm. on the estate of Alice Townsend was granted Aug 25, 1749 to her son Joshua Townsend of Bolton, Worcester Co. N.E. Hist. & Gen. Reg.
