Biography

Mary was born in 1820 [1]. Her birth was registered in Hobart but she may have been born in New Norfolk, a small town where her father had property.

Mary met convict John Alsop when she was about 18. A child Susannah was born to them in 1840.[2]

Marriage

A year later, in 1841, Mary married James Hay/Hays/Hayes in Hobart [3], who was aged 20, and someone she had probably known her whole life.

James and Mary settled in New Norfolk.

Family

Eight children have been located for James and Mary.

Death

Many family trees have placed her death as 11th April 1893 [4] and this may well be correct. The death record lists her as a widow aged 66, cause of death senile decay and dropsy. The informant was the undertaker.

This record does not match Mary's age but it is possible Mary's family were guessing how old she was. In the record, her death is listed as 1 April 1893, whereas the St Mathews records [5] shows her as dying 11 April 1893 and aged 73.

Hi Peter, how wonderful to see more Triffitts on wikitree.

Is this the Mary who married James Hay? I haven't quite got my head around the Triffitts outside my own line.

I have Thomas Triffitt in here as Thomas Triffett, he was an early entry in my tree before I discovered the different Triffitt spellings. He is profile Triffett-5 . If he is the same one as Mary's father, please let me know and I will give you access to him and his descendants. My line is his daughter Susan who married Owen Daley.
