Biography
Birth Estimate
Rebecca Truax was born sometime around the later 1760s, the daughter of Samuel Truax and Sarah Stillwell. The estimate is based upon the projected birth of her son around 1789 and her marriage in the late 1780s.
Marriage Estimate
Rebecca married Benjamin Mellott, most likely in the late 1780s in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. The marriage is confirmed by the writ submitted by her brother, Stillwell Truax in 1808, wherein he names her son and her relationship.[1]The 1790 Census presents a male child under age 16.[2]The 1800 Census presents that male child between 10 and 15 years.[3]That child remained a minor in 1808, thus, indicating an estimated birth of about 1789. Therefore, the marriage likely occurred after 1785.
Death Estimate
No documented death date is known. She was deceased by March 1, 1808 when her brother, Stillwell Truax, so described her in an official writ.[4]A female between age 26 and 44 is presented on the 1800 Census. One doubts this female is Rebecca Truax. The writ of 1808 presents one son born to her. The census return presents that child and also two female children under age 10. Therefore, is it likely she passed away in the early 1790s and he remarried.
