Biography

Biographical Note from County History

Jeremiah and Thurzy (Quick) Tryon, former born in one of the Carolinas, latter in New York; both died in Vigo county, he in 1861 in his sixty-first year, and she September 2, 1889, at the age of eighty-six. When a young man Jeremiah went to Ohio, where he married, and in 1840 he immigrated to Montgomery county, Ind., where he resided until 1844, when he removed to Pierson township, this county, and here spent the remainder of his days. When he first came to the township there were only a few fields in cultivation. He was a Republican in politics, but never aspired to any office, and he and his wife were members of the U. B. Church. There were born of their marriage twelve children.[1]

Research Notes

Don't confuse him with his uncle Jeremiah Tryon who is found in Vigo, Indiana in 1830 and Greene, Indiana in 1840.

Birth places for Jeremiah and Thurzy in the county history seem to be wrong. All four censuses that Thurzy is in she is born in NY and both census for Jeremiah he is born in Ohio. Also, unless we have the wrong parents for Jeremiah, he was surely born in Ohio. Jeremiah's mother, Prudence, was born in South Carolina, which is likely the source of the error.

1830 census reconciliation:

2m<5, Elijah, 1, Edwin, 3
1m5-9, Aaron, 8
1m20-29, Jeremiah, 29
1f5-9, Sarah, 6
1f15-19, unknown but too old to be their child
1f20-29. Thursey, 27

We seem to have only nine of the twelve children claimed for Jeremiah and Thurzy. There are clearly nine in the household in 1840 and Thurzy is still young enough to have a few more. But there are no more in 1850 so if there were three more children at some point, they did not survive long enough to be counted in a census.

1840 census reconciliation:

3m5-9, Clarkson, 5, Jesse, 7, Jeremiah Jr., 9
2m10-14, Elijah, 11, Edwin, 13
1m15-19, Aaron, 18
1m30-39, Jeremiah, 39
2f<5, Thurza, 5, and Margaret, 1
1f15-19, Sarah, 16
1f30-39, Thurzy, 37

In Civil War Draft Registrations, Piatt County, Illinois, June 1863 [2], there are Jeremiah Tryon age 32, Clarkson Tryon age 28, and Elijah Tryon age 33, all farmers in Unity Township, all born in Indiana. They are Jeremiah and Thurzy's children.

NOTE: Jeremiah's widow, Thirza or Therza (other spellings too) married a second time on 3 Feb 1870 to Paul K. Welch.
