Biography

Gardner was the son of Noah Tryon and Prudence Jones.

Wife: Catherine ______, b. abt 1804, Ohio. (Possibly Catherine Rudisell Brown.)

He made a will dated 8 Nov 1869 that was proved on 22 Feb 1870.[1] In the will he leaves all his real estate to his wife Katharine [note spelling] for as long as she remains a widow. To his oldest daughter Mary Jane he leaves $10, to oldest son Noah J., $150, to second daughter Prudence, $5, and whatever is left is split between four sons Jacob R., Mahlon B., William Henry, and Hiram. Proven 22 Feb 1870.

In 1840 Mary Jane is 10-14 and Prudence is 5-9 so Mary was the first child and Prudence was born between Noah and Jacob. All were still alive in 1869 when Gardner's will was written.

The birth date of 24 Aug 1800 in the findagrave record and 9 Sep in the Wes Tryon book is too close to brother Jeremiah's birth date, the latter of which is fairly certain in that it is on his headstone. Gardner's headstone is too weathered to read more than his name.

Yes. He is identified as William H. in all the records except 1860 when he is Henry.

For example: "United States Census, 1850," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MHVZ-P4Y : 12 April 2016), Gardner Tryon, Pierson, Vigo, Indiana, United States; citing family 89, NARA microfilm publication M432 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).

Perhaps William H Tryon identified in this findagrave record: https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=14450414

is the same Henry Tryon in the 1860 census:

Looking at this tree which you gave as example-- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:1:MW7H-378 -- the dates for Noah, and Noah's parents - the mother in particular- Rhoda Lucas Lucas-1195. I find a birth for a Noah the same year to a John Tryon & Phebe Lucas. I find the name Phebe Lucas associated with two more births. Possibly Phebe is a sister of Rhoda & a second marriage for John Tryon, or possibly a different couple entirely.

I made two lists: one of Tryons in the 1830 census in Ohio and one in the 1830 census in Indiana. The most intriguing to me is Prudence Tryon then aged 50 - 59, living in Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co. IN. The only Noah is in Norton, Medina, OH and he was between 30 - 39. Gardner was also in Lawrenceburg aged between 20 - 29.

1830 census Ohio Tryons John Tryon, Delhi, Hamilton, OH. 1 male under 5, 1 male 30-39, 1 female under 5, two females 5 – 9, 1 female 20-29.

William Tryon, Homer, Athens, OH. 2 males under 5, 1 male 5 – 9, 1 male 10 – 14, 1 male 15 – 19, 1 male 40 – 49 1 female under 5, 1 female 5 – 9, 2 females 10 – 14, 1 female 40 – 49.

Ansel Tryon, Plain, Wayne, OH. 1 male 20 – 29. (Went on to live in Indiana)

David Tryon, Clinton, Wayne, OH. 2 males under 5, 1 male 5 – 9, 1 male 40 – 49, 1 female 5 – 9, 1 female 15 – 19, 1 female 20 – 29. (Went on to live in Indiana)

Noah Tryon, Norton, Medina, OH. 2 males under 5, 1 male 5 – 9, 1 male 15 – 19, 1 male 30 – 39, 1 female 5 – 9, 1 female 30 – 39.

Note that there is a maximum 20 year spread in ages between the different heads of household, so they could all be brothers.

1830 Census Indiana Tryons

Gardner Tryon, Lawrenceburg, Dearborn, IN. 1 male 20 – 29, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20 – 29.

Jeremiah Tryon, Vigo, IN. 1 male under 5, 2 males 5 – 9, 1 male 15 – 19, 1 male 20 – 29, 1 male 50 – 59, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5 – 9, 2 females 10 – 14, 1 female 60 – 69.

Joel Tryon, Vigo, IN. 1 male 15 – 19, 1 female 15 – 19.

Margret Tryon, “Undistributed”, Crawford, IN. 2 males 15 – 19, 1 male 20 – 29, 1 female 70 – 79.

Prudence Tryon, Lawrenceburg, Dearborn, IN. 1 male 5 – 9, 2 males 10 – 14, 1 male 15 – 19, 1 female under 5, 1 female 50 – 59.

Thomas Tryon, Lawrenceburg, Dearborn, IN. 1 male 15 – 19, 1 female 20 – 29.

William Tryon, Franklin, IN. 1 male under 5, 1 male 30 – 39, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20 – 29.

William Tryon, Knox, IN. 1 male 20 – 29.

Again, the male heads of household were of similar ages, with the youngest Joel (who sounds newly wed and probably at the top end of the age range, i.e. about 19) and Thomas (slightly older, but the "shape" of the household suggests he is also newly married).

The presence of Prudence heading a household suggests that she was a widow, may be the Prudence Brown mentioned as mother of Gardner, and is possibly looking after a couple of grandchildren as well as two possible younger sons. She is only two lines down from Gardner on the census list.

I did try to explore the relationship to Noah Tryon and Prudence Brown -- the names come from a family tree on familysearch.org -- but with no luck. There are far too many Noah Tryons, and no Prudence Browns during the period when Gardner was born. However, I did notice another family tree on familysearch.org which had a Noah son of Gardner Tryon. Whether this was a mixup of generations, or whether the family alternated the use of Noah and Gardner it's hard to say. The date 1800 for Hamilton Co., Ohio is very early for that part of Ohio; they would have been amongst the very first settlers, but checking in histories of Hamilton County didn't yield anything either. And from 1800 county boundaries changed quite a lot, and the census didn't really reach into Ohio in 1800; I think there are bits of census, but more reliable are land records. Of course, Noah Tryon the father could have married twice, given the high mortality rate amongst women in the frontier, with first wife Prudence and second wife Rhoda (or the other way around). We'll just have to keep checking. Or see The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, "Ancestral File," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:1:MW7H-378 : accessed 2017-02-03), entry for Gardiner TRYON.

Do you have thoughts on his father's parents? I find records for a Noah, son of John Tryon and Phebe Lucas. (Also 2 daughters to that couple: Mable & Phebe) I wonder if the indexes are correct, I find a John Tryon & Rhoda Lucas - and some trees attribute Noah to that couple despite the discrepancy of the mother's name.
