Biography

John was born in March of 1799 in Ohio. He appears to have an early marriage and four children in the 1820s (see Research Notes). He married Mahala Jones purportedly in 1834 in Cleveland, Ohio. They had eleven children. He died in 1882 or 1883 in Indiana (his memorial and death record disagree on year).

Children:

William b 15 May 1837
Mary F b 28 Feb 1839
David b abt 1841
Hiram b 23 Apr 1843
Charles b abt 1845
Etha b abt 1847
Moses b 26 Oct 1849
James b 17 Oct 1850
Alice b 26 Jan 1852
John Wesley b 16 Apr 1856
Prudence b abt 1859

They have children about every 2+ years except for James. He is anomalous and if you leave him out the sequence is very regular. Is he adopted? Is he a grandchild from first marriage?

Research Notes

In the 1820 census we find John and presumed wife adjacent to Noah and family in Miami Township, Hamilton County, Ohio, both 16-25 with no children. In the 1830 census we find him in Delhi, Hamilton, Ohio, which is very near Miami, so they may not have even moved (no same neighbors though). He is 30-39, has 20-29 year old wife, 1m<5, 1f<5, 2f5-9. This looks like he had a previous marriage. In an addendum to TFA [1], a Jerry Eldridge states: "He [John] had (4) children by his first wife : Noah, Deborah, Mary and John." This would somewhat fit with the 1830 census information but wrong distribution of genders. John Tryon (abt.1832-) could be one of these but is probably born too late. A Deborah Tryon, b. 1827, father of Ohio, mother of Kentucky, married married Perry Burchfield (Birchfield) 30 May 1846 in Hamilton, Ohio. They appear in many later census records. The coincidence of time, place, father is convincing.

In 1840 there is a John Tryon in Dearborn, Indiana (a few miles from Delhi) who could be this John. He is 30-39 and wife is 40-49, with 1m<5, 1f<5, 1f10-15. It is not a good fit.

There is also a marriage record in Vigo, Indiana, of a John Tryon and Nancy Soesbee, 18 Jan 1835. The John of this profile is still in either Hamilton or Dearborn at this time so it is not him.

Note that TFA and above addendum list a number of siblings for the John of this profile that are very likely wrong and TFA does not recognize that Jeremiah Tryon, uncle of John, is in Indiana along with the rest of the family, a critical error since they've assigned essentially all Tryons as children of Noah when some are likely of his brother Jeremiah.

In the 1880 census his wife's name is Catherine but same age as Mahala so uncertain if this is new wife or just another name for her. Also says she was born in New York instead of Kentucky.
