Biography
William was the second child of that name born to Edward Tryon and Mercy Harris. He was baptized in Old Saybrook 6 Apr 1777.[1]

- WILLIAM TRYON 5.88g, fifth son of Edward Tryon 4.31d and Mercy (Harris) Tryon, was born at Saybrook, Conn., date not shown, and was baptized there Feb. 16, 1774. He married Mabel McKean, daughter of Barnabas McKean and Mabel (Hall) McKean, date not shown. They had ten children:

The earlier baptism date in TFA is the first William, son of Edward, who apparently did not survive childhood.
Only four of the above children have been documented outside of TFA. All four documented children were born in Greene County, NY, so he lived there through at least 1822. He is in the 1800 and 1820 census but is not found in the 1810 census there. Brothers Asa and Richard are also there in Durham, 1810-1830.
There is a Harvey Tryon, (Canastota) Lenox, in the 1859 New York State Business Directory [2] and also in the 1860 census there [3]. Canastota is where Harry Tryon lives.
Could Horace be Horace Tryon (abt.1818-abt.1850)?
Adeline Davis or Davies is possibly daughter Adeline. She was born in Albany County about 1806, married John Davis/Davies, had six children, and lived in Oswego, New York through at least 1865. More research is needed to tie her to this William. Update: While this doesn't specifically tie Adaline to William, in the death record of Amelia (Davies) Horton (1838-1907), her parents are listed as John Davies and Adeline Tryon Davies [4].
The 1820 census indicates he and two other household members are engaged in "manufacture". Eldest son William and later generations were shoemakers so likely this William was also a shoemaker.
In the 1830 census they have a 10-15 male and a <5 female living with them. The male could be another son but the female is too young. Also a 70-80 female, possible mother-in-law.
Grave inscription indicates age of 59 which gives a birth year of 1776 which fits with what we know of his baptism and that he is second of this name, the first having been born in 1774.
William Tryon and Harry Tryon are likely his sons. William Tryon (Jr) was born in 1801 in Greene county where William's brother, Asa, lived. Both brothers could have moved there together about 1800 and then William later moved further east in NY. This is supported by the 1800 census of Freehold, Greene, NY, where William Tryon, age 26-45 appears [5]. In that record he has wife 16-25 and another male 10-16 who is too old to be a son.
This appears to be his grave [6] and son Harry's family is buried there too.
In going through the 1800 census of Freehold, Greene, NY, I have found three Tryons: William (of this profile), Asa (who I've proposed is a brother), and a James Tryon (Tryan in the census). All three are 26-45 and, given the way things generally happened at the time, are presumed to be brothers. They are far from each other in the census record so likely didn't have adjacent properties. If they arrived around 1798-1799, as it seems, that would not be unusual since the community was well established by then. Adjacent properties were more a sign of second generation family.

The second is the last named child Lora (sometimes listed as Dora). Based on age at death she would have been born 1822 prob Greene Co., NY, and married Perry Burdic (usually spelled Burdick) as his second or third wife. She died Dec 1892 and is named as "beloved wife Lora Tryon" on Perry Burdic's monument. He died mid-1860s, she being about 18 years younger than he was lived on until the 1890s. I shall look further, particularly for Lora. As she is clearly a Tryon, I am setting up a profile for her (have several census records, etc.), but at present not linking it to William's.
