"Peter TUCKER being sworn, said that Joseph TUCKER, Jr. did prior to 20 Dec 1803 inhabit & cultivate said tract; and that he was head of a family .. that his brother Joseph Jr. sold to claimant the said tract and that his brother Joseph, Jr. had obtained a limited concesstion to settle 350 arpens, his family consisting of himself and eight children. Granted to Simon DUVAL 23 June 1806..." 25 March 1804 Joseph and Helen were baptismal sponsors for their nephew, Peter TUCKER, of Peter & Christine, in Ste. Genevieve Dist., Missouri Territory. Joseph and Eleanor TUCKER returned to Kentucky in 1805, where they lived in the Rolling Fork Settlement for about 12 years, but eventually they returned to Missouri. 5 April 1805 "Joseph TUCKER, Jr. for and in consideration of the sum of two horse creatures sells unto Nicholas and Isidore MOORE all his right, title and claim to a certain improvement he has made in Ste. The three judges of the first election in that township, sometimes called 'commissioners', were: Thomas RINEY, Joseph TUCKER, and Aquilla HAGAN. ("History of Southeast Missouri," p. 345.) 8 May 1821 Commissioners to superintend the building of the Court House and the goal were Robert T. BROWN, Joseph TUCKER, Sr., and Thomas RINEY. ("Heritage, Vol. 16, 1998, p. 2") Joseph was the assessor of Cinque Hommes Twp. in 1821 and served as the first assessor of Perry County from 1821 to 1825. In 1821 he reeived $51.00 from the state treasure for his services as assessor. He became a town commissioner of Perryville in 1831. The minutes of the county court record that in 1821 he was paid five dollars for supplying a copy of "Guyer's Digest of the Laws of Missouri," for the use of the clerk's office. 1822 Plantiff, State of Missouri, Defendants: Francis TUCKER, Joseph TUCKER, Joseph $ BROWN. Type case: Assault & battery. Perry County Circuit Court, Case #30. Ruling: in favor of plantiff. Fine: $57.00 custody sheriff until judgement performed. ("Heritage," Vol. 14, p. 137) 1823 Ordered by the court that Joseph TUCKER, Senr. be appointed assessor of Perry County for the year 1823. Also the court appointed Jo. TUCKER, Senr. and Frederick C. HASE Commissioners of School lands in Cinque Homme Township. ?Order Bk, ? p. 58. Saturday, July 19th 1823 - Ordered that Joseph TUCKER, Senr. be allowed twenty days for assessing all taxable property belonging to the inhabitants and non residents of Perry County being situate within said County and tht he be allowed two dollars per day and one dollar and fifty cents for stationary to be paid out of the State Treasury. p. 60 (Ibid.) (PCHS 'Heritage,' April 1985, p.43) 1824 Grand Jury of Perry Co, included among others: Michael HAGAN, Richard S. DORSEY, Lewis MOORE, Joseph T. TUCKER, John DUVALL. (Perry Co, "Heritage") If this is our Joseph Jr. what is his middle name? Does it appear on any deeds? 1830 Fed. Census, Perry Co., MO, p 398: TUCKER, Joseph 00001001 - 01010001 Joseph & Eleanor age 50-60 Slaves: 1 male 10-26 1 female 10-26 N., William, born 31 Dec. 1832, bapt. 3 Feb. 1832, son of Louis & Mary, servants of Joseph TUCKER, Sr. # 828. (Callier, p. 26) 2 May 1831 the county court authorized the incorporation of Perryville, with Joseph TUCKER and Thomas RINEY as town commissioners. (MCF, p. 4) In the "Weekly Perryville Union," of 21 December 1877 Joseph TUCKER was named in an article titled, "Old Times". He died 25 July 1833 probably of cholera. After the death of Joseph TUCKER, his sons: Charles, Peter J. and Joseph III and their wives conveyed 240 acres in survey 855, T35N R10E to Edward WALSH and Apolnerius TUCKER, both of St. Louis Co., MO and to Valerio FAINA and Guy T. ELDER of Perry Co., MO 8 Aug. 1833. (Perry Co., Deed Bk. 1, p. 372) Later on 30 March 1835, Apolnerius TUCKER of St. Louis Co., MO and Valerio and Matilda FAINA conveyed land to Guy T. ELDER of Perry Co., MO. Recorded 5 Jan. 1838, Deed Bk. 2, pp. 336-8, Perry Co., MO. (Documents transcribed by Patricia Bishop Obrist from copies at the Perry Co., MO court, October 1, 2003.) What was the cause of death of Joseph Tucker and Eleanor Simms Tucker. They died within two days of each other, in July, 1833. That would seem like some disease.
