Biography

John Fritham Tudgey was born on "April Fools Day" [1][2]which is a day with certain traditions. It is possible that these are related to calendar changes. "The pre-Gregorian calendar ended the year near the end of March, coinciding with the beginning of spring. With the new Gregorian calendar, the beginning of the year was moved to January. The calendar change was slow to take hold and there was resistance to it, but those who continued celebrating the new year at the beginning of April, old style, were ultimately shamed as “fools”."[3]

Fritham, a hamlet of Bramshaw, lies in the New Forest and is on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border.

John Fritham Tugdy, son of John Tugdy and Rebecca Tugdy, was baptised on 20 May 1838 in Bramshaw, Hampshire, England.[4][5]

His mother died of Scarlet Fever when he was only 4 years old[6] and his father remarried finally following his first wife to the grave the year after his son was married.

John Fritham Tudgey and Sarah Othen were married 6 or 7 January 1861 in St Marys Church, Southampton, Hampshire, England[7]. There is a conflict with the date recorded on a copy marriage certificate obtained from the General Register Office in 2003.

He lived in Fritham with his parents as a child[8][9].

He may have moved to Southampton to take up an apprenticeship as after his marriage he is living with his father in law and working as a carpenter and joiner[10]. He continues to work as a carpenter and his household grows with 3 more children[11][12]. He has lost his first born son but has 2 daughters and another son. In 1891 the last time he appears on the census he has only his son remaining in the family home[13].

He died 10 September 1898 in Southampton his cause of death being Morbus Cordis and Embolism[14]. Morbus Cordis - Means no more than heart disease. Probably used by doctors when they didn't know the exact cause of death but were sure it was natural causes.

John Tudgey died on 10 September 1898 in Hampshire, England and his estate passed probate on 3 December 1919 in London, England.[15]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
